Iron Pre Essentials Kits For The DIYA Store - Register Your Interest

In the SE application can any benefit be realized by reducing R3 and R4 so as to increase current from around 80ma presently, given that heatsink and transformer va is adequate? Just trying to maximize an already great pre.

Thanks. nash

feel free to try

but don't fuss later, when you find that there is difference between "enough" and "excessive" ........ only in heat :clown:

targeted current in combination with proper error gain stage are doing just fine

Just finished, more or less, my Iron Pre SE. A fun build and it seems to work as advertised! Listening to it now and it sounds excellent. Connected to a M2X with Frugel-Horn XL.

edit: I was reading what Advertisers wrote...... almost enough accolades :devily:
I would like to add to that.

I have built several 'maxed out" solid state preamps and all of them seem to have one major flaw in that they seem to sound thin and not have enough body and weight. The music just did not seem real enough. Then I built a 01A tube preamp followed by an AVC for volume control and loved it. Lovely sound and dimensionality on my OBL15's with Papa mono two pair Sony Vfet in PP mode and F5TV3 monos.

Can the little IP beat that? Come on?! To my great astonishment the answer is YES. It has the rich sound and dimensionality of the 01A tube but with greater depth and impact. The music sounds clearer and more realistic than ever. Its got the effortless delivery of a V12 engine!

A very big Thank You to ZM for having given us this sonic masterpiece. I wish to make special mention that all the documentation for the build has been very well organized; the BOM's, schematics, PCB renderings, all in clear type and high resolution and easy to find in one place. Great job and thanks IAIMH!

bummer is, in case if/when I'm building tube gadget, it is sounding the same as if I'm building it with sand

so, I can make Toob Iron Pre, and it'll sound the same as this one; it'll glow, though, and it'll have cap in signal path, but whatever

intention was, and it'll be achieved in future - that you and your cousin and cousin's cousin and ...... can make Iron Pre for cheap

cheap and no shortage, who can ask for more

right ditto with Papa's agenda of lately

I get it. The price is very reasonable, but those trannys aren't right? Seems that much of this sound has to do with the trannys in fact. I have never made a unit other than one phono pre (and it used Cinemag Inductors, not trannys as such). So really, this is the first experience of any kind where I have used this type of design. Maybe some of the upsides and downsides need to soak in, but it matches so very well with a class A amp that I have. There you have the surprise. Not just any preamp has sounded right with this amp. Just lucky I guess?

hi res, frontal and top nudity, then general - including spks
You asked for it ...

A few photos of the internals and installed on top of the power supply for my Pearl 2 phono preamp. Also in the photos is my restored Tandberg 64X, Lenco L78, Yamaha CDX-890 CD-player, M2X amplifier and Frugel-Horn XL speakers.

I've already used the Iron Pre for a bit and can find no fault with it. A pleasure to listen to and use.
