Interest for potential GB for UDNess PCBs and matched FETs.

Hi All -

I've looked into PCBs. It's not as intimidating as I expected. 😀 I will be using PCBWay.

A few preliminary questions to try and answer -

Timing - PCBWay does not return to production until 10-Feb. I've been told total turn around including shipping is ~2 weeks. After that, I truly don't know how many working (hobby) days it will take me to get through all the matching. My commitment is to keep you posted re: progress and yields. Then, give me some time to get things to the post and sent out. I'm doing this nights and weekends.

Cost - Ballparks
Boards (both) - ~$40
Estimated board shipping ~$20
100 Mosfets - ~$130
100 J113 (Turns out cheaper to buy 100 than 50) - $15
200 2SK209GR (These need to be matched tighter, and I'm told yield is lower) - ~$55
Shipping for FETs ~$10

Total ~$270

For 10 sets $27 + your shipping
For 15 sets (let's hope yield is good) - $18 + your shipping

I'm waiting on a bit more information for boards, but hope to have an order placed this weekend at the latest for everything. I'm moving forward.

Thoughts welcome... this is a "group" buy after all.

Thanks to everyone for the interest and feedback. I've learned a ton.

Group buy is now cut off. Please review costing to ensure participation. I hopefully caught all non-lower 48 people that may have been interested.

I'll guarantee the 12 sets. If others are interested, please add yourself to a wait list after Astromo. Hopefully yields will be good, more people will get sets, and costs go down for us all. 😀

If anyone wants just a set of boards or wants unmatched FETs, speak now or forever holds your peace. It's way cheaper to order them now that volumes are up a bit. I just can't commit to taking all the time to match more than 15 sets of semis.

Try JLCPCB.com - not only is the PCB cheaper (30 PCBs = $17, 50 PCBs = $23 - I would be willing to buy any extra PCBs), shipping is $21 (or $27 for 50 boards) via DHL. Pick whatever color you like - it only adds 3 days to the production time.

I am good with all your other questions - seems reasonable to me.

Edit - Thanks again for doing this GB!

A couple of tips from a recent Group Buy:

  • Amazon is probably the cheapest place to buy bubble mailer envelopes, if you decide to use those
  • Amazon is probably the cheapest place to buy clear package tape
  • Wrapping the PCBs in paper, minimizes scratches from rough handling
  • A kitchen digital scale is handy when shipping
  • USPS first class shipping, which includes tracking numbers, is shown below. Prices change on Jan 27th and, unsurprisingly, it's hard to tell whether this table shows the OLD prices or the NEW ones.

Thank you all very much for the advice. 😀

JLCPCB is quite a bit cheaper, and according to their website they are not closed for the holiday.

It looks like the "defaults" of 1.6mm board thickness with 1oz copper is what we're after. Their price for the small boards is far better than PCBWay. I'm almost curious if it's accurate. They quote $0.30 for the boards (50) and $8.00 for the engineering fee. So a total of $8.30 for the SMT boards. The main boards are showing $14.90 + $8 (50). I have not uploaded the Gerber files for a firm quote yet, but so far, I'm happy with that pricing. Excellent.

I'll try to get everything ordered today.
