Go to projectorcentral.com. The have a good review of this projector. Summary. Great picture for movies. I am considering one myself. Best Buy does no interest financing for either 6 or 12 months. It is great.
Yea, bad news is that bulb is ~$330. If you think about it though, 3000 hours at ~4 hours a day is 750 days or over 2 years of use. By that time, you may be in the mood for an upgrade.
Yeah I think it works out to around 10 cents an hour for average tv/movie viewing a year.
BUT many DIY use 250 to 400 watt bulbs (this Infocus is 150 watts) you will save money in electrical even though the bulb is more I bet it ends up costing you the same in the long run.
I'm just thinking, I have done MANY diy projects before...
AND you ALWAYS end up nickel and dimeing stuff to finish it off.
How close will you be to $900 when you are done with your DIY projector, and how close will it be to that Infocus X1 in terms of performance...

Yah, Ive been been thinking about getting one of those myself.
$899 after the $100 rebate is a killer deal. I have seen SVGA
DLP projectors in action and the screen door effect is almost non
existant at 6' or more away from a 7' wide screen. Plus $299 for a bulb puts it at exacly the same price as my overhead projector
for bulbls. My bulb 575watt HMI $100 1000hrs. life tops. 3000hrs
on the infocus, not to mention the money I will save in power useage.
I think I am going to have to sell my projection panels now and see how much cash I can come up with inthe next few weeks.

you can find the lamp for the infocus X1 for around $260. Which is almost what you guys have spend on your OHP retrofitting with a MH lamp, ballast and accessories.
go to www.froogle.com and search it.

If you ask me there is no competition..DIY is still WAY cheaper than current prices for complete nice new commercial projector.
Way cheaper? I have seen the x1 in action. It delivers a great image. The price for this projector has dropped a lot.
I am getting the impression if you want your diy to even compete with the x1 you would need a 1024 native lcd panel which is at least $300
As another member wrote it looks like you will spend $500 or $600 to build your diy with quality stuff. After its build it will be a lot bigger and heavier than the infocus x1 will it not?
So to save $300 or $400 bucks?
Of the few screenshots I have seen of diy projectors I was not impressed.
Can someone please tell me why this is worth it when you have things such as the X1 available?

Guys, I haven't been to this forum in over 6-mos. However, I had a diy system consisting of a 7300 lumen Elmo projector, nView Z115 and a TV-3000. It was quite good for a few hundred dollars. I had a site for a while and quite a few people viewed it. I just wanted something that I could mount to the ceiling that was quieter and didn't generate so much excess light and heat. I sold that and bought a CRT projector. It was far superior but so damned big and heavy. My basement ceiling is 7'10" and it was just too obtrusive. I sold it and bought an X1 in Dec, 2002. I had to pay $1,600 for it then and I don't regret it one bit. At $900, it is an absolute steal for a DLP projector. If you're really serious about buying one, I'll give you some advice: if at all possible, audition one first. For that matter, go to a HT store and look at several DLP projectors to be sure that you don't suffer from the rainbow effect. I and my family don't. So far, nobody visiting us has. But, apparently, there are some who do have problems. Finally, the X1 is soon going to be replaced by the X2 which will not have a Faroudja processor (the X1 does, I didn't notice that listed in your spec sheet). The X1 equivalent will be the Infocus ScreenPlay 4800 and will be more expensive. I think that the X1 has really stirred things up in the digital pj market. I also think that traditional home theater stores may be complaining to Infocus about this. You have to spend $5k to find a really noticably better pj (IMHO). That's just my humble $0.02

i think if i get an x1 from USA i can save about $600 australian, but i just wanted to know, how much does the thing weigh? would it be practical to have one shipped over?
It weighs about 7 lbs. But it comes with a bag and and some cables in ahealthy sized box so I would guess about 15 lbs shipping weight. My friend borrowed and X1 from a buddy at work and we watched a couple movies on it. The picture quality
is excellent, far superior to the XGA lcd projectors here at work for playing movies. My friend and I both saw rainbows however, It wasnt bothersome to either of us becuase they didnt show up very often. I am still going to buy one when I
get my finances settled with my house. I did see alot more rainbows tward the end of the movie when I was starting to fall asleep. I think that tired blinking bleary eyed thing made them more visible to me. The movie I was watching was fairly dark and had alot of action and I guess thats where they tend to be seen the most.

MY LCD OHP combo deal.
I tore a LCD screen out of a Samsung 150MP (1024/768 or whatever) and a contrast of 300:1 and a not bad RS time (like 25 I think) cost me 450 usd for the monitor and 147 usd for the 3M ohp with 200 lumens I use. There is no rainbow effect thing on it and my DVD's came out so well that people just drool over it🙂 I use a PC though (with its DVD player) the screen also alows you to use s-video (my PC DVD came out better though) composite and coax. This stuff came out great. Plus I am a hard core PC gammer and 800x600 is not gonna cut it.

Yeah jhovis is right Ive heard alot about the X1 and its all good!
You cant get a better deal than that right now. Heres the thing the bulb may cost alot right now but what about 2 years from now? To me bulb cost is the least I should worry about if a projector is rated 2000 hours and up.
Everything will drop in price sooner or later. I think the only badside are the rainbows IF you see them and the 800x600 native resolution capable of 1280x768, I dont own the X1 but I have a dlp with same specs and its awesome, plenty enough for almost anything.
Anyone who think their diy project looks good will be blown away when they see what these things can do. Like I mention before diy projector is a good hobby but if u want awesome results commercial projectors like the X1 that cost a little more will be better.
Oh and another thing I dont think anyone should post anything about commercial projectors anymore cuz this is a DIY Video forum. Unless its about retrofitting a bulb!

Cheap/Inexpensive PJ's and Your Own Made OHP/LCD Comb.
I think if money is only reason then it is better to make more money and buy expensive stuff than waste time in building stuff where your time is more expensive. This is rude.
I like building own because you can tweak many things and you can upgrade everything 3rd month or so. LCDs are going go through similar revolution which PCs went through, MH bulbs won't change.
My line of thinking is, build very solid light source where you have simple slot to through you LCD and project and this should work for 3 to 4 years when again the paradiagm shift will happen.
I bought two projectors , one ohp, one lcd panel, one b/w lcd panel, one mh ohp, still quest continues to beat professional projector. Yesterday I opened my JVC LX-D300U and looked directly at the bulb light (could not resist white light feeling) and there are three LCDs with different colors, their is tons of complexity in it and where as OHP and LCD Panel is simple like anything.
Just blurbing my thoughts but we should look more philsophically than financially when judging things which are done just for the fun sake.

One Epson 52C Also is same price.
I saw Epson 52C also at price around this price and htat seems better than this.

x1 update
just an update. You can get the x1 for $999 over the labor day weekend at Best Buy with no interest financing for 24 months. For all you math people, that is ~45 a month after tax. Just make sure that you pay that sucker off in the 24 months or interest is accrued from the purchase date.
Big tangent... Ever notice how best buy always has the rebate prices on their fliers. They also like to make the rebates confusing and then deny your request for various poor reasons. I always make photocopies of all the info I send in, and I eventually get the rebates. However, I know that they must use this ploy to discourage people who send in rebates. Makes me mad, and we need a class action suit 😉
Best Buy must have to reserve funds for the rebates in their financial calculations. Therefore they have modeled the % of people who will return the forms. I believe that they may deny X% of the claims knowing that a high percentage will not try again.
