I‘m wasting my time in one of the most beautiful places in Europe

The world is changing in to a nuttier and nuttier place thats for sure. Most often its driven by greed.
Thats true, the whole "civilized" human society is driven by profit maximization, consumers consume, governments consume, everything is consumed by everyone. Wait for few more years as AI stuff evolves and tuned to maximize profit beyond what we can even imagine. I hope there will be a chance to wake up before there is real dooms day and the whole system evolves so much that things like hunger or greed could be swapped to love and passion for example🙂 I hope for the best. Betters start yesterday changing our own habits and ways of living and seeing things.

While travelling in places like Turino, I like to walk in roughly a cardinal direction opposite the main tourists sites for an hour with no destination other than "NO DESTINATION" and stop in a cafe, bar, bakery, park, etc. and try to experience as much local activity as I can. Europe is great for this. Most places are.

Somewhere near there is one of the 3 finest motorway service stations (foodwise).
The other 2 are just north of the St Gotthard Tunnel who seem to specialize in cakes and Tebay in Cumbria (just south of Scotland).
The worst ones I experienced are in Germany, GB (all the ones which are not Tebay) and Belgium.
No Belgian eats at motorway service stations, only tourists do. Belgians rather leave the highway and find the nearest frietkot (fries shack) to eat our national dish: Belgian Fries (that Americans call wrong french fries) or so. Or in worst case the local mcdo or similar fastfood shop. And when we have time and money, we search a local small restaurant as we like good food. Motorway service stations are very expensive and absolute crap concerning food.

Last time I was in Turin on a sunny day I had a good time at the restourant at the top floor of the Intesa Sanpaolo skyscraper. Panoramic terrace access was included in the price. It is the highest building on the city - 35 floors I believe - so the view is very good and unobstructed. The meal itself was nice, the restaurant does have a Michelin star anyway, but careful examination of the price list is recomended to avoid unexpected charges.

Go to Rome. All or most public fountains use drinking water.
I’m not sure what fountains you might have drank from, but I learned the hard way on one very hot afternoon in Rome when I ran out of bottled water in the summer of 1990 that this was not the case!

I didn’t know what end to point at the toilet! It was three days before I was back on my feet.

"I’m not sure what fountains you might have drank from", but I can ensure you that I drank from these ones hundreds of times in Trastevere without any intestinal consequence! It's one of the best public waters I ever drank.

Ancient Taoists predicted "a great universal divide" among all earths inhabitants during the time period we happen to be in. Its interesting to read into when taken with a dose of reality as required. Anyway it was said and predicted to last some 1500 years. Who the heck has that kind of time on their hands to wait this one out?

You're immune!
Touché! 🤣
Anyway, Chromenut's tale makes me remember what happened to me in my first honeymoon to Canada. I was near Calgary going to the Banff National Park and I happened to drink some water in a lodge in the woods. Immediately after drink I reada sign in the room saying something like "don't drink this water, it's from the well". I passed the rest of trip searching for toilets until someone gave me some pink tabs which turned my intestine in a sort of concrete.
Then I was not immune...

Gaetano.

So here I am in Torino, Piemont, for a one-day trip with the family. Got there at 10 in the morning, and until now, I have seen h&m, COS, Zara (and another one not worth being mentione), and had a bowl of something inspired by japanese kitchen.
According to maps, I haven’t moved fuether than 4 minutes from the starting point.
So much for holidays.

I don't travel that much.. but my favorite is Akihabara.

You can have your H&M, Zara, etc... we have them all within 10 miles of chez nous. Pfftt... Surely, you have those stores in Switzerland, huh? I guess I fail to see the point.

BTW, we have real Japanese food... not something "inspired"... why eat such when in Italy?

In Italy you are free to have a cappuccino after lunch or dinner if you want, but simply it's really hard that an Italian will do the same 😳

I once eated mozarella with sugar in Italy in a restaurat in spite of olive oil. Just cause I like it with sugar and the same with Ricotta. Both makes excellent and simple dessert with sugar on them ! They were near to call the caribinieri !

So you should try that in spite of going in a Starbuck in order to live something mistical which a travel in Italy should be !

As a fervent admirator of Italy and their art as a friendly neighboor, I never was borrying in this country. But for sure Akihabara is something special at nigth ! The perfect place to give up one's teenagers !

Akihabara is about electronics.

Have you ever walked into a seven (or so) story building filled with High End audio stores?

Or into a mall filled with stands loaded with resistors, capacitors, transistors, knobs, wires, lights?

I do not know how you can travel in Japan and miss Seven Eleven shops or Hakihabara ! But I hated to see starbucks coffee there...

Yeah, liked that in Tokyo or Osaka (the entires stories with hifi and tech shops)... I purchased all my Oyaide cables there 🙂 ! Also the Yodobashi Camera stores are convenients for that 🙂 🙂 !

The guys at the customs always looked at me as an extrateristrian as I putted the cables in my cabin bag, litteraly ten meters of the excelent Explorer cable and some Oyaide Across 700, lol !

Some years back, before Hong Kong was handed to the CCP I went on holiday with my partner and treated her sister and partner to a holiday. My partner worked there for a decade and knew her way around the place so we knew to get up as soon as it was light and were out while it was cool. Her sister and partner announced they were on HOLIDAY, got up late, had leisurely breakfasts and rarely lurched out of the hotel before 11:00 and complained about how hot and humid it was for the rest of the day. Every item of food was treated as if it would either run out of the bowl or explode if prodded with a chopstick. Eventually, we kinda did our own things and just agreed to meet twice a day for meals.

Not just children...

Mozzarella with sugar? Really? Have to try it...😉

Gaetano.
At least the non true bufala one (aka pastorized basic milk)
blends well with sugar .
But I also use a little ricota in the Chantilly I make.
However the milky inside true bufala blends well (for my tastes) with a freshy green olive oil ( the ones that are very clear with subtle acid fresh grass taste if I dare that scandalous shortcut).
