A classic example of this is the Marshall guitar amp where distortion makes it sound better.
I believe Nigel's example of a guitar amp illustrates a distinction--- is the device part of creating music or reproducing music. IMHO, those are two different things.
Yes, these are entertainment systems. If yours keeps you satisfactorily entertained, in the way that you define that, it is well doing its job. Should some perfect measuring system entertain you, then it is doing its job equally well. Neither listener can declare to the other that they are not being entertained, for this or that reason.
Yes, it matters a lot.
As an engineer, I am always trying to correlate between what is measured vs. what is heard.
I am amazed that (seemingly) very few people here are interested in that.

what measurements correlate with sound? please do tell...
Because i heard lots of amplifiers which measure great but sound like crap.
LOTS 😎what measurements correlate with sound? please do tell...
And so it goes with every hobby that I have had.... In cycling, one of my favorite bikes was an old iron framed beast.
Some 'audiophiles' believe when comparing something near universally considered to be excellent to something else
that just because they can hear a difference it must somehow be better > how silly is that 😉
PS.
EG. Do you like hearing your impedance curve or your unrestricted frequency response ?

As my deceased business partner would say, "It’s entertainment, not dialysis"

Good point, can be biased many ways.
I wont say most people, lets say some people.
Dont know what to think, or even need to care.
But when someone else tells them what is better.
Then they repeat that, as some sort of law or standard.
When actual experience is different or non existent.
Comically, diversity among even music choice or genre vary as well
Heard plenty of demos with junk annoying basic music.
Tell me how great it is.
Sounds like junk to me.

Provided of course this opinion is from a DBLT. egNo. If it sounds good, it is good.
Many (all?) Golden Pinnae amps are unstable with certain loads, have loadsa xover and other THD bla bla at times ... all dependent on the signal & thermal history. No wonder they sound 'different'.
These amps do badly in DBLTs against boring low distortion amps which don't have such 'features'.
The only exception I've found in some 2 decades of DBLTs is the original JLH Class A 10 W. Operated within it's limits (only 10W into easy loads) this 0.1% performance was preferred over boring low distortion amps. Otherwise, 'boring' amps are preferred in DBLTs.
I've spent a lot of time, without success, attempting an amp with it's distortion profile without the added space heater.
