Ian asynchronous I2S and S/PDIF FIFO KIT group buy

Hi All

Spending a happy weekend building my new Station Pi setup - thanks Ian!

I have a question on the ESS controller - does anyone have any information on the 10 way white ribbon cable socket - the through hole socket that fits on the display board - not the surface mount one that fits on the adapter. I've damaged mine, so I could do with info such as part number, manufacturer, supplier, or any other likely stockists. I've had a look on Mouser, Digikey, etc (UK sites) but can't spot it. Any help welcome.

Regards Adrian

Hi Adrian,

No worries, I can give you one of the FFC connector for free. Let me know how can I help.

Regards,
Ian

Hi Ian,

Is the isolator schematic of the isolator II the same as the isolator part of the Fifopi Q3?
Would there be any advantage in using the isolator between an usbridge sig. and a Fifopi?
(always looking for improvements)

regards,

Hi Supersurfer,

Theoretically a isolator before FifoPiQ3 would be good to have. But I have never try. Please let me know the result if you give a try.

Regards,
Ian

Thanks Ian - that would be great. I'm very interested in the ReclockPi project, so maybe I can PM you with a reminder to drop one in when I order that so that we don't have to process and post it separately? I can live without having the controller remotely attached for a while. Any thoughts on when ReclockPI might be ready?
Regards
Adrian

Order received!

Cheers for your hard work Ian.

It wasn't easy tho. Package had to pass thru ISC Chicago (USPS) which it like the Bermuda Triangle of postal hubs. Plus the vaccine was passing thru at the same time.

Had to wait a week and a half just to get a tracking update. Very understandable tho with safety issues. Had to prepare for delayed shipment in 2021 or that it would disappear since Chicago is notorious.

Anyways, it was only a slight worry. If anyone has a basic 80 watt + soldering iron / gun they can recommend for the MKIII pls let know. I will probably end up just using it one tyme for this project.

Hi Ian,

I'll check out Amazon if I can wade through all the knock-off soldering products. I don't plan to tackle the MKIII until mid-January, but hope to get the Q3 up and running by the weekend as a portable/transportable solution. I didn't realize it had such a small footprint so it gives me more options now.

Yes, I was worried that the Chicago postal hub would mix up the packages and accidentally sent me the vaccine. I would immediately complain and exchange the vaccine for the Q3 since the Q3 is such a work of Art.

I have no clue about DIY DACs, so I cannot distinguish a DDAC from a DDDAC.

I have no clue about DIY DACs, so I cannot distinguish a DDAC from a DDDAC.

There is a blog though that maybe of interest. I read it from time to time preparing for my first experience with the FiFoPi build. The blogger formerly used Allo Kali and discusses his new experience with the FiFoPi w/ a DDDAC. You maybe able to pickup an possible upgrade recommend somewhere in the blog:

After the FiFoPi upgrade, there's an LiFePO4 power upgrade then a SuperCaps/UltraCaps upgrade.

I just shoved all-in with the whole package (FiFoPi, LiFePO4 and SuperCaps) instead of incrementally upgrading over time to save on shipping costs and take advantage of this Group Buy offerings. The Excel spreadsheet order form auto-calculates the shipping weight so you can optimise your purchasing decision.

That was a great help. For the FifoPi I saw on that Audio Creative review that they power it with a "New Class-D voltage regulator" Is that available to purchase in the group buy? I looked on the order form but not familiar with all the producs, so wonder if it called something different?

New Class D info can be found here. I'm using this one in my DAC stack. You need to feed it with 6.5VDC minimum.

No, the "New Class-D voltage regulator" is a third-party product, not an Ian Canada product. On the blog, there is a hyperlink if you click on "New Class-D voltage regulator" to direct you to the respective sales product webpage.

Ian Canada does offer a LinearPi Dual and LiFePO4 battery as power supply options.

Both these power supply options integrate seamlessly with Maxwell Ultra Caps if one considers going the Ultra Caps route.

You can also integrate Maxwell Ultra Caps with your own power supply if needed.

This current Group Buy revolves around these Ian Canada power products. I believe the Group Buy ends around the 23rd of this month.

You can click the Group Buy link on Ian's signature for more details and savings:

https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/gro...us-i2s-pdif-fifo-kit-buy-421.html#post6413248

If you use your own power supply, these products give you the option to SuperCap:

25A UcConditioner 5V: $49.- (Regular $59.00)
26A UcConditioner 3.3V: $53.- (Regular $67.00)

If you go with just a Ian Canada power supply:
33A LinearPi Dual:$89.- (Regular $99.00)

w/ SuperCaps option add:
25A UcConditioner 5V: $49.- (Regular $59.00)
26A UcConditioner 3.3V: $53.- (Regular $67.00)

StationPi is also a good option with the RPi / FifoPi combo for separation of duties and reduction in RFI/EMI:

35A StationPi PCB KIT: $29.- (Regular $35.00) [Note: If you go this route, you may need 2x3.3V and 1x5V instead of 1x3.3V and 1x5V]

Anyone, please correct if I got any of this wrong since I'm just focused solely on the battery solution.

Highlight of power thread:

UcConditioner takes care of dynamic demand current while LinearPi takes care of continuous current.

You can think of it in this way. UcConditioner is a big pond. LinearPi is the pump to supply the pond with water. And at same time you are using water to wash your car at the other side of the pound, the amount of water you are using keeps changing dynamically.

No matter how much water you are using, the level of the pond doesn't change because it's too big. But to keep the pond level no change for long term, the pump has to supply a continuous water flow into the pond. The continuous water flow equals to the averaged demand water that you are using.

If the pump did a bad job with making too much wave on the surface of the water, the wave can still be transferred to the other side of the pond (high frequency noise). So a good pump with very smooth (low noise) and stable (good response) output is also very significant.

I hope you can do a circuit simulation by yourself so that you can understand the principle more.

Ian
