Could that (PS) be the cause??
What is your MCLK frequency fed to PCM board? That frequency will limit maximal Fs for sure. Please read user's manual of PCM board for details.

- can a PCM56 be connected to the PCM board like the PCM58? I understood these chips were rather backwards compatible, although the PCM56 has 16 bits. The datasheet says: " SERIAL INPUT FORMAT 100% COMPATIBLE WITH INDUSTRY STD 16-BIT PCM56P ".
- can I also use a PCM board after my CS8412 receiver? It does have a MCLK output, but of course the source (a player) goes just NOS out, i.e. 44.1 kHz, and MCLK then is 11.2896 MHz if I am correct. Here I would also like to replace my existing set-up that connects to a TDA1541.

If your are using Dual XO II, LEDs on Dual XO II will tell you everything about the input I2S signals of FIFO. You will know:
1. I2S signal is good
2. I2S signal's Fs (Fs=XO frequency / xFs )
3. I2S no signal
4. I2S signal is in wrong Fs
5. Fs of I2S signal can not be supported by current XO frequencies

Yes, I confirmed Amanero can play 384KHz, however it's on-board 22.xxx/24.xxxMHz XOs will limit the PCM board to 192KHz. If you want the PCM board playing up to 384KHz, you need to feed 45.xxx/49.xxx or 90.xxx/98.xxx MHz MCLK to it.

I believe you will not have a great difference here with the TDA1541 between 192 & 384 Khz upsampled materials : 192 Khz is enough.
The simultaneous mode provided with 192 Khz is good enough, so no needs to push the TDA1541 to its theorical limit.
An external MCLK with an isolator in front of the Amareno will add you a lot in SQ as well....
and even more a FIFO to have a time alignement of those signals to avoid hearable jitter.
You can beginn as you plan but I will add an isolator board as well as the Amareno has no isolation.
You can swap the Amareno if not bought yet by The Wave I/O from Luckit or the Joro's equivalent, or DIYhink...

I received FIFO and SiS570 clock board and now my Sabre 9018 DAC + Raspberry PI +FIFO+SiS570 Clock is running. Thanks again for your work.
I have also a small idea and suggestion for upgrade of your clock boards.
I do not know whether it is a good idea or not but I'll write it.
There is quite a lot of Raspberry enthusiasts who are trying to use RPI as a player with I2S DAC. Unfortunately RPI has not good clock for I2S but RPI can be set in slave mode: https://hifiduino.wordpress.com/2014/11/13/raspberry-pi-b-digital-audio/
Perhaps a minor modification of your clock boards allow use it as master clock for RPI. Of course,it will require a slight change in the I2S driver and needs communication through additional gpio pin or pins between RPI and clock boards (to send information about resolution and sampling rate) but I guess it's not very difficult.
