Addition: just followed the excellent manual of archphile and enabled mpd-minimal...which takes ffmpeg out of the equation, quiet a dramatic positive effect...pire, explosive dynamics and a filler tone

still not sure if any of the i2s options should be used:

I just installed my fifopi ultimate with Pulsar clock on a Rp4....battery upgrade to follow.

I used as a starting point volumio. I2S goes into a Soekris Dam1941.

Sofar my reference is a Alix 1D with a sotm Usb card with mpdpup feeding the Soekris over USB / Xmos.

So, my target is: Use I2S natively, have even better quality than my old Alix Hw and legacy Mpdpupplus tidal, spotify

I followed Ians advise to start with volumio and the setup was a breeze. Nevertheless the sound is good, but not great. Alix still is more fluent, more natural, deeper room...you simply listen to the music and the character of the sound changes with the recording, very transparent.

So, i try to find whats going. Is this the Rp4 ( slower hardware better ? Alix has just 256mb and 600mhz) ? Is this the software (mpdpup a pure memory player for old HW ?).

So, I tried archphile next as it is like mpdpup mod based and pretty small...thanksfully there is a new distro with an excellent manual, so again configuration was a breeze.

Sound is completely different. Much more transparent and dynamic than volumio, but as well much leaner in tone, a bit technical...so not sure if fifopi needs a certain i2s driver which i did not find yet (with volumio i get a light show of fifopi when booting, with archphile nothing like that).

So two questions:

a. any guidance how to make archphile work with fifopi corretly ?

b. what do you consider the state of the art software for this combination in terms of pire SQ ?

Another easy one to try is Moode. Much better than VolumeIO and equally easy to manage. Likely not SOTA, but free, easy and decent sound. I am former MPDpup/Alix user, but made too many changes in gradual transition to RPI3/FIFOpi to make direct comparison of sound contribution of these two software stacks.

Nice to meet you and have you here with us... I believe I followed your advice in 2013 or 2014 for the Alix setup... I will set the whole chain up to do easy a/b testing. The soekris has auto detect, so i can have both in parallel... i will follow first the path now to bring the best practise from the old rimes to archphile, meaning: Play with buffers, mpd.conf, try underclocking and undervolting etc...when I think i am done, i will try the next distro and compare again, will go for your suggestion for sure.

At the moment archphile has very good resolution, maybe better than Alix, but very very stiff... maybe i will try an Rp2 to see if even its not the fifopi nor the software, but tge stiffness of the rp4... i will for sure figure it out and report back.

I will read your reports with great interest. Based on my experience you are on all the right tracks. You have a great clock which is the primary thing. Next up is power. Migration to battery will be great. I stayed with linear supplies with lots filtering. Found that supercaps added a lot. Vibration control and isolation around the clock is also worth some attention if possible. Once I got the power and the clock sorted, it was good enough that I abandoned the software fine tuning. Likely there is something to be gained so it will be interesting to see your observations.

Im using roon audio system on intel nuc mini pc(core). And when i have connected direct to core via usb to xmos next by i2s to soekris 1021. Sound was dry, not much deep. But when i added raspberry PI4 with moode audio system,and roon bridge system added, and connect via usb to xmos next by i2s to 1021 sound is much better, more fluid, natural. Off corse all full batery powered .But i will compare this connection versus raspberry4 with fifo pi reclocer and muzg discrete oven controled special clocks, via i2s direct to 1021dsm dac. all powered by bateries . With no reclocer this connection is little worse than usb. Mayby it is becouse i dont have i2s isolators.

I followed Ians advise to start with volumio and the setup was a breeze. Nevertheless the sound is good, but not great. Alix still is more fluent, more natural, deeper room...you simply listen to the music and the character of the sound changes with the recording, very transparent.

So, i try to find whats going. Is this the Rp4 ( slower hardware better ? Alix has just 256mb and 600mhz) ? Is this the software (mpdpup a pure memory player for old HW ?).

So, I tried archphile next as it is like mpdpup mod based and pretty small...thanksfully there is a new distro with an excellent manual, so again configuration was a breeze.

Sound is completely different. Much more transparent and dynamic than volumio, but as well much leaner in tone, a bit technical...so not sure if fifopi needs a certain i2s driver which i did not find yet (with volumio i get a light show of fifopi when booting, with archphile nothing like that).

So two questions:

a. any guidance how to make archphile work with fifopi corretly ?

b. what do you consider the state of the art software for this combination in terms of pire SQ ?

Hi! I want to clarify something that is not clear for many of us, and it is not explained elsewhere.
When using i2s signal from a SBC you will have some limitations, because of the main SoC.

Raspberry Pi 3: max. i2s PCM 384kHz 32bit
Raspberry Pi 4: max. i2s PCM 384kHz 32bit
Odroid C2: max. i2s PCM 192kHz 24bit
Odroid C4: max. i2s PCM 384kHz 32bit

For DoP (DSD over PCM) you will have to use a capable driver. The generic driver in Volumio / Moode Audio is capable of DSD64. The Audiophonics ESS9028/ESS9038 driver is capable of DSD128. To my knowledge there is no driver capable of DSD256 available.

If you want more than that you will have to use another source, like a XMOS USB to i2s interface capable of PCM768kHz and DSD512.
