Thanks Ian. I'm afraid that "tolerate" means switching at the wrong threshold level that would also introduce jitter. Plus Aqua specifically has been known to have problems with 3.3V I2s, so I would'n take this risk. I'm not an expert and so this may sound silly, but instead of the logic shifter chip, can an analog gain stage be used, like a fast opamp with a constant 1.5x gain?

Ian, really RasperryPi, not BBB ? Did you have a chance to look into the twistedpear chronus/botic stuff I posted earlier ? The BBB should have the superior audio architectur and the software is there as well alreaady, what is missing is how to get your masterclock switchable back into the bbb (which has the input for a clock already) and instead of using chronus, using your fifo, which would be my preference....
