I would not go as large a 300L for the Maelstrom, I have 2 subs with this driver and I did extensive experimenting and built many mockup enclosures ranging from 120L to 300L and settled on 245 vented (20Hz), which sounded best to me.

I know. But the room is < 1/10 the cu volume and putting the LABs in there would mean I'd probably have to sleep in them. I still have a set of Ariel drivers, so I was thinking of building another pair of these for everything > 80Hz.johninCR said:Going from a Labhorn to an iso loaded small box is going to be real culture shock.
Now if someone had a set of old Linn Isobariks for sale in/near Sydney for a reasonable price, I'd just buy them.
Brett,
Faced with that choice, I'd have put my mattress on top of them.
Kingdaddy,
Regarding the Maelstrom, for HT the big EBS box is great and for music I just stuff the ports. I agree the big ported box is too sloppy for music.

If I had it to do over I would go for a multi driver IB manifold with something like 4 or 6 18" Avalanche drivers and save a lot of floor space, not to mention the bass quality compared to any box design. Not quite the output of a bass horn but, IMO better sounding bass.
IB is WAY underutilized as an option. I can't wait to have a house again with an attic or basement. Dual driver manifolds, push/pull alignment, with close enough spacing to act as a line source. Of course then I'd want a pair of really small speakers and convince guests the bass is coming from them.
did anyone look at that MTX jackhammer? Insane! I wonder how much that sucker costs..... probably more than parthenon!
I'm sure it's a lot more than a parthenon based on the market they seem to be after. The basket reminds me of my JBL 15GTI but on super steriods. Maybe I'll get lucky and spot one at a department store which they never sell and and keep marking down to $175 like my gti. At 320 lbs I wouldn't want to get in an accident with that thing in my trunk.
maybe I shouldn't have started this thread... lol
yes, I KNOW a horn would be a good idea, but the amount of time and money I'd have to spend on the horn I can't justify.
the maelstroms will extend upto a few hundred Hz, won't they? according to their description they do. 🙂
I was originally going to get a pair of cheap 18's. they don't have the same excursion, but are higher efficiency... hmm. I dunno.

Woah... that's around 63mm Xmax! On a 22" driver! That thing probably displaces more than the gas tank in my car!BassAwdyO said:did anyone look at that MTX jackhammer? Insane! I wonder how much that sucker costs..... probably more than parthenon!
there's always the 18inch RE XXX...
nearly 92dB 1w/1m
1600watts rms
32mm 1 way linear X-max 🙂
oh... 29Hz fs 😛

Everyone should click on the JackHammer picture on the website...
A basketball ball is sitting next to the woofer, ridiculous.
I'm very surprised by MTX Audio, I never considered them to be serious about subwoofers. This design looks great. I guess Adire or someone else could do better with less, but again they are still the first to market such a unique woofer with unsurpassable performance.

hahaha
MTX does make a lot of cheap subs, but that doesnt mean they can have a decent one too.
A lot of companies are like that (range of cheap to expensive stuff)..

Looks the right size to me...
And if its 22" across, it must be like 3' high...

Wheres the distortion vs frequency graph ;-) Il trust it when I hear it!

That horn,is ridiculous. I first saw it years ago,and thought its amazing. Now I think its stupid
1) using so many 18"s is wasteful of money
2) using no feedback CDP etc and 1watt valves seems strange after all that effort for low distortion

And the whole project isn't? Figure out the construction costs and the drivers become small in proportion.mike.e said:That horn,is ridiculous. I first saw it years ago,and thought its amazing. Now I think its stupid

The SUBWOOFER efficiency is 120dB/ 1 Watt/1 meter......The real maximum power fed to both subhorn measured with an oscilloscope at the highest musical peak roughly reaches 6 watts per channel. Most of the time the amp driving the circuit is going to be idling along at under a watt where the distortion of any decent 300B amp is going to be below audibility. ALL audio is in the end about personal preference, so maybe that combo is what he prefers.

If I had such a reduculis bass horn I would surely drive it with a few hundred watts where the SPL is outrageous also. Whats the point in having 6watts going to so many 18"woofers. Even if they are using small amps and want low distortion they could probably get the same distortion out of a bigger amp at that low power. Plus extra extension both lower and louder.
