Hypex NCore NC500 build

After all the fuss about science and stuff, how was the Nord nCore? I wonder if it could be modified into single-ended?
It can indeed, however the opinion was XLR was preferable to most. I could make one with RCA's for you, not a problem! One of the future development will be switchable XLR/RCA and a 12v trigger on the buffer board. This is way off at present. First is a Pre Amp with DAC!

NewClassD offer discrete Op Amps but they don't do OEM pricing preferring to deal directly with the DIY world. I may order a pair to see what they are like.
I certainly wont be sending them off to a Lab for testing any time soon I would imagine the cost to be prohibitive. I will try and get over to the guy who builds the Valve amps who has all the equipment.
Re the Pre Amp Abrahamsen have agreed to sell me complete boards, displays and transformers to engineer in my case, Ill add a DAC also. These are fully balanced and should come in at a very good price.

Hello fellow nCore Enthusiasts

Well I finally made it round to Colin's (aka Boggit) place yester eve to collect my nc500 amplifiers

Colin, thank you for inviting me into your home and offering me your Beer too (I remained sober and didn't have any for the record as it was 2-3 hour drive home) 🙂

So of course I had an opportunity to listen to the Standard and Colin's UP Buffers, with both BURSON v5 and the SPARKOS OpAmps

What I can say is that the differences are not MASSIVE, but they do alter the character of the nc500 vs. standard OpAmp

These comments below are me listening to music in Colin's system, of which I am not familiar, but this is what I could discern...

Standard LM4562 - clean and linear, treble not explicitly fatiguing in any way, but when compared to the latter, could be contrived as a little boring (I am aware another Source/Pre-amp may change this)!

BURSON v5 - Seems to emphasize more of the Midrange and Upper Bass and also glazes over the Treble in a subtle, non-ear-hurting way

SPARKOS - does similar to the BURSON v5 but just not as much, however the more noticeable difference is in the treble, which seems to glaze over the high-frequencies a bit more than BURSON (a hazy, valve-like signature)

In Colin's system the BURSON v5 delivers more punch and warmth, by contrast the SPARKOS smooths the treble over a bit more and sounds a little more laid-back in doing this

Like Colin, I preferred the SPARKOS, just slightly, because shrill treble annoys me the most and there are few recordings out there that don't exhibit this ear-piercing sibilant demeanor - honestly, often makes me want to watch a movie instead of listening to my music or need glass of wine to dull my senses.

The BURSON v5 may be more suited to a dull sounding system, or persons that like hard rock (and maybe Symphony, like Colmo claims it makes instruments stand out more)

Anyway, I got home just before midnight so have not had a good opportunity to compare the nc500 to my BiAmped TAG McLaren 60P yet
...I did quickly wire the nc500 up to my LINN KOMPONENT (£800 Rear Speakers) as a 2.0 Stereo config, in case I blew them up it wouldn't be the end of the world unlike my beloved £5000 MA PL200! With those mid-fi speakers, I can't tell any difference to the TAG McLaren amplifiers that powered them previously.

More news soon ...bring forth the WEEKEND! :-D

If the difference are small, I surmise you listened just the difference of oscillations between the oap and the board buffer layout ! So you colored the sound by oscillations !

I surmise if you listen to an oap 2604, or opa 627 at unity gain you will have also different result ! And also with a DHT tube... sound a little like Bruno did not the Job (And I'm sure he did as he is brillant) and you spended 1/3 of the amp to inject instaility in the OEM board to buy the expensive buffer! Good business ! Does it become a vendor thread as well here ?

Where is Julf ?😀... Has it a flue ?

Ps. The TAG McLaren are good amplifiers, in case that came out like the nc500 are not good... I'm expecting more power from nc500, negating BiAmp that I currently have, which is of benefit to me - these nc500 run a lot cooler too, left them on all night and most of the case was cool, just slightly warm under the PSU area of the case 🙂

Yeap I know, just don't understand if Nord or Hypex. And you are sinn bined if you say to the vendor to try a 2604 because you have micro.... He was not sinn bined for that, I was just to have answered to the insult he confirmed twice (boggit) 😉

So dear sir, I tell you, at this phase as you spend already the money, go for some good other oaps ! Here the game is you just add 2, 3 stages in the amp (tha oaps) ! I surmise you could have the same result with a Mosfet amp !

Btw I have Nothing against that as far you have an information about that. For me "the non color" of Hypex is a coloration as well ! Idem for my Chord amp (switching supply, etc) ! Every system chain of the hi fi need a set up because the room, the speaker, the subjectives taste of the owner, his buying phantasms (I'm not the last here as well!) , etc : and that's what you did, question is (for the other readers) : is it the good way, does it Worth the price in relation to the cheap OEM board ! I surmise the best board to be the first one without buffer !

I'm not sure the expensive Mola Mola NC1200 has one nor the NC400, so it comes to say the OEM NC 500 and others OEM from Hypex are better ? I don't think so, I believe we need setup with our different hifi without scope consideration (e.g. the oscillations of a standaloe buffer board not designed for a standalone oap... not sure Bruno P could like it, but after all yes, as you say, Good Sir too, it's a vendor thread 🙂 ! Call it the ptinciple of reality ! Of damned where i readed that 😉

How are rthe "little" Mac Larren in relation to the modded Hypex please ? Far, near ? Heard it was a good amp !

Yesterday I visited ISE 1016 in Amsterdam.
At the Hypex stand I discovered a nice range of lower power Ncore boards with integrated SMPS, very well suited and apparently aimed for active loudspeakers.
Integrating these in a quality loudspeaker will make this thread rather redundant as IMHO much more is to be gained this way instead of playing around with a socalled "best" input stage for an NC500....

Interressant ! OEM ?

I look forward to listen to his SPeakers BII, too expensive for my wallet, but if as good as some are saying, certainly a good listening experience as benchmark (despite the "low" memory of ears/brain in time...).

I could give an update, the datasheet is in my mailbox for months but it is up to the hypex guys.....😛

I would be interested to compare. Assume they sound very similar with the defaults as someone pointed out that nc400 OEM version looks very similar to the nc500, just nc500 running on the higher power rail of SMPS1200?

Nc500 will give you some more flexibility at the Input Buffer and higher 8ohm/4ohm ...only current limited on the 2ohm to same as nc400 2ohm spec

If my OPPO BDP-105D was inevitably the only source I would use, I would probably get a Sparkos to soften the brutal treble I am still hearing with a lot of material, new CDs, DSTV FreeView etc (modern recordings tend to sound a bit harsh, I think)

I have read that people with Tube PreAmps are big fans of this Class D technology...I am understanding why now...

Still am enjoying and getting used to these nc500, they are as good as my TAG McLaren amplifiers and furthermore handle the bass a bit better(tighter, less bloom)
