How to understand description of different transformers

Andrew!

Please read your suggestion again and try to follow it step by step with unbiased mind!

"Find which tappings are on the SAME winding." There are 2 taps on each windings. Lets take the grey one first!
"Label them A & B"
OK, now there are gray A and gray B now. Sounds really good, now I have a phase reference! Lets do this for every other windings!
"Connect one A tap to one B tap."
OK! I'm so excited!
"Power ON via Mains Bulb Tester. Because two tappings are open the bulb should not light."
Oh, S&@-t...! It lights.

I can show you the 6 (at least) errors you made (during the searching for 1 bit of information), but I don't want to bore everybody.

A simple and understandable method to find matching phases:

-Connect transformer through bulb tester!
-Mark any one of the output wires! (A piece if insulating tape alone is enough, you don't need to give surname and other names...)
-Connect parallel the next wire pair to the first one containing the marked!
- If bulb lights, then swap the wires of the newly attached winding!
-Repeat the above 2 steps until no more windings are left!
-Switch off, unplug primary!
-Mark every wire connected to the first marked one!
-Disconnect wires, finalise marking!

Hi all,

Hope I'm not threadjacking here, but this looks like a good place to ask this question rather than starting a new thread.

Is there any way to determine the VA rating of a transformer without having any documentation about the transformer? If if makes any difference, the transformer in question is an EI core with multiple taps.

It's an Rcore with two completely separated sets of windings.
One set is on one limb and the second set is on the other limb.

I can't mix them up. Maybe you can !
