General Burns Community Centre

For discussion on Saturday: next steps?

Here's a possible venue for a future gathering at which Ottawa DIYers could bring gear and do some listening: the General Burns Community Centre is normally available on weekends, centrally located, fully wheelchair accessible, has free parking, and I can get a good rate ($5/hr). You may view pictures of the two rooms here:

General Burns Community Centre > Bookings

This is just a suggestion 🙂

PS Anybody else care to join for lunch on Saturday?

I took the liberty to start a thread in clubs and events to get us a bit more in the spirit of actually getting some serious stuff together. If it makes sense to you guys we can post the correct info there as well. I'm guessing that the actual information for the meets and such would best be suited to such a thread. We could keep the mundane stuff here. That is if you think that makes sense?

Ottawa DIY Fest Planning

Hi, Mark. I agree that "Clubs and Events" is the best forum for planning and promotion of an Ottawa area DIY Fest. There seem to be 125 related posts elsewhere in DIYAudio, so there is a challenge in migrating the thread.

The use of a community centre, such as the General Burns Community Centre (GBCC), is ideal. A few years ago a fellow Leakie put together a LeakFest in a similar facility at Maitland, On. and it was a blast. Participants arrived from Toronto and New York state, due to proximity to the 401.

By all appearances, GBCC has easy access for gear (ramps are always good for heavy gear). This may seem a small detail but it is critical, as has been shown time and again when setting up the Ottawa Vintage Radio Club meetings and auctions (see ovrc.org). Old console radios are very heavy and boatanchors are aptly named.

Are you aware of any actual experience in booking this facility? Good locations are hard to come by and advance planning (sometime years in advance) is critical.

Well we had a great meeting. It's nice to be able to put faces to the names. And a good time was had by all. It's turning out that there are quite a few people that have great abilities in Ottawa. Our upcoming gathering will prove to be very interesting indeed. Pierre , Adam and I took a look at the venue and it is actually pretty nice. Not a bad shape for a good meeting space and also a space to listen to music. That is what we are after in the end right!

I for one can't wait!

Ottawa Meeting

Glad to hear turnout was good. Sorry I could not attend. Saturday is always bad for me due to work commitments (shop is open on Saturdays). I can think of 3-4 others who would likely attend on a Sunday afternoon. I am hoping this group opens the door a DIY audiophile club like the Montreal Audio Club. I have been aware of them for perhaps 10 years, have seen their member displays at the Festival Son et Image audio show, and plan to attend a meeting this fall. I will discuss their organization, how they got started, etc and report at a a future Ottawa meeting.

Hello Gents

How come no chatter?

Man!

All the interesting guys with all their ideas at the lunch and not one person has posted a review of the DIY Ottawa lunch 2.

Ok gripe over.

Ok well as far as I understand there was a couple of weekends chosen towards the end of June for an actual meet with equipment.

Pierre is the point man on this and we will have to wait for his guidance.

As for constructive things to do on the forum thread. How about how many members willing to show up on the following possible weekends. More of a survey than anything else.

Shipping to Ogdensburg

Hi guys,
Sorry I couldn't attend, as I had to work that Saturday. My wife's a high tech widow!

Don't mean to thread-jack, but does anyone know the way to go about having parts from US suppliers shipped to a holding pen (PO Box?) in a near-by US border city, such as Ogdensburg, to avoid heavy shipping fees into Ottawa?

I think I recall someone discussing this here or at the PE group.

Please also post when the next gathering is and I hope I can make it next time.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

If it is shipped via UPS, send it here:

*Hold for Customer Pickup*
Your Name
Your Phone Number
c/o The UPS Store
2981 Ford ST Extension
Gateway Shopping Center Route 37
Ogdensburg, NY 13669-3474

I think they charge $5 US per package, which can get expensive since places like PE tend to ship a single order in multiple boxes depending on weight.

It's about a 45-55 minute drive door to door, and you'll have to pay a few dollars each way to get over the bridge.

If your parcel is not shipped UPS, then you have to use:

*Hold for Customer Pickup*
Your Name
Your Phone Number
C/O Roethel Parcel Service
1801 Ford St.
Ogdensburg
New York
13669

They charge a little more I think, and their hours are not as good as the UPS store.

To be completely honest, if you declare the goods at the border, and pay taxes, then you might as well just bite the bullet and pay the shipping to Canada. Here's the typical scenario:

Gas money (190km round trip) about $18
Bridge Toll is about $7
Parcel charge $5-$10
2 hours of your time

This means you're looking at about $35 out of pocket before you factor in what two hours in the car is worth. I know it spreads the costs out so you don't feel like you're paying everything up front, but it's probably better to just ship to Canada for your average parcel.

On that same note, NEVER EVER SHIP CROSS BORDER WITH UPS unless you know for sure that it's an international service, and that ALL brokerage is included. I've been dinged with an $80 brokerage fee on a product that was worth less than that.

I've had the best luck splurging on USPS air service, providing the parcel isn't too heavy. For some reason, they seldom ever charge tax, and there's no brokerage. The shipping up front is more money, but if it's something expensive and not too heavy, then it's well worth it.

Cheers,
Owen

Owen,
Thanks! I've been hammered on UPS cross boarder chargers nearing 3 bills before too. Once bitten!

I'll probably just bite the bullet and ship door-door but out of curiosity, do you know if its possible to have it shipped USPS to an Ogdensburg PO box?
