Monday April 12 meeting report
Hi everyone,
A side note to start. I stopped by Reset Electronics and they are moving around the end of the month. Reducing stock beforehand, so discounts from 10-50% on a variety of things, e.g., Hammond project boxes 25% off, soldering supplies 40% off.
Back to the meeting. 6 people were there: mwmkravchenko (Mark), PierreQuiRoule (Pierre), Multisync (John), Soundchaser001 (Matt), ripcard (Rick), and I. We learned a bit about each other, had a few laughs, and remembered to talk a bit about audio diy. Mark had his CSS SDX-7 Unhorn box with him - impressively small. Also had some bare drivers: SDX-7, EL70, Trio 8, Trio 12, and a B&G Neo 8. I hadn't seen any before, so appreciated that. Not sure if Matt still appreciates the Trio 12 - almost ate his change, and then he realized it might have gotten close to his credit cards. 😱
Hope all is well Matt!
Mark offered again to facilitate buying cabinet materials through his business accounts around town (e.g. baltic birch ply), and he also has sources for drivers.
I mentioned using the UPS Store in Ogdensburg NY as a shipping address - qualifies for "free shipping to US" deals and in some cases means you can get things that only ship in the US. I received 6 boxes through them a few weeks ago, no problems. Took about an hour to get there from the east end of the city. Rick goes through there monthly and may be willing to pick stuff up. Post here if you are planning an order and maybe some people can cooperate on a pickup run.
Everyone attending today is keen on another meeting. I'd like to do a poll on when (coming weekend, an evening during the following week, or the weekend after that). Also whether it will be a meet and chat, or a chance to bring and demo equipment. I thought I could do a poll on the board but don't see how. If anyone knows, let me know, otherwise I will do one externally and post the link here.
So a positive start for an Ottawa Valley audio diy group! Hope to meet more people next time.
John

A great time!
Yep I'm convinced that between the six of us there was at least one full brain!
Now all we have to do is get a couple more gents cued up and we can set up an interesting little show and tell event.
Looking forward to the next meeting and it was a pleasure meeting all of you guys.

Hey, great report John. I too, enjoyed meeting some of the local audio DIYers. Being kinda new to this hobby and not having an audio/engeneering background, it was a bit of an ear opener to listen to some of the more informed technical stuff. Some funny stories too. I think if we can get another meet going (for those that couldn't make it today) and it goes just as well, we could be on to something here.
Very generous of Mark to offer his help with sourcing both materials and drivers. This could be significant savings for speaker builders.
As John mentioned some of us have been using the UPS store in Ogdensburg, NY for a while now. It can be a huge savings, some times, on goods out of the States. All one needs to do is give your own name and the address of the store when ordering. Things ship quite quickly as it is a well known and used shipping destination. It will cost you $6 return for bridge tolls and the store charges $5 to hold your package until you pick it up. It is located literally around the corner from the bridge. I'm a half hour away so I've been down a couple of times!😉
So whenever there is a "free shipping in the continental US" offer you know it'll only cost you $11 plus your time and gas. Of course, taxes are due at the border on larger purchases but you would be charged those if shipped direct to you anyway. Here is the address you need to use:
The UPS Store
2981 Ford St. Extension
Ogdensburg, NY 13669
Call them at 315-393-1188 if you didn't have tracking info to confirm arrival. While you're there you can check out the Lowes, Price Chopper or Walmart for anything else you might need.
Take care, Rick.

Hi Guys,
Glad to hear everything went well! I tried to sneak out of my regular Monday afternoon meetings to join you guys, but I didn't have any luck. Next time it might be best to aim for a weekend or weeknight, and that will probably get more folks out.
Either way, it's good that the inaugural meeting went off without a hitch!
Just as a suggestion, if anyone here lives in a condo with a large common area/party room, that might work well for a meet. I do happen to live in a condo, but there isn't a common room here. The only other suggestion I can make for a venue would be either of the universities. There might be a room that could be rented cheap, especially if anyone here is a student.
Keep me posted on the next event, and if anyone needs help organizing, I'd be glad to pitch in.
Cheers,
Owen

Thanks to everyone for coming out. It was great to meet all of you.
As far as I know my credit card still works. I bought a new sound card with it later in the day so the strip still has the data on it.
Looking forward to future get togethers.

After spending many many years on bulletin boards and forums it was very nice to put faces to names. Mwmkravchenko's generous offer of reducing some of his old stock got me started thinking of making some party speakers for my son.
The lunch meeting also motivated me to get going and finally finish a few projects that I started a couple of years ago.

I forgot to mention I will be away for a week or 2, something to do with a 25th wedding anniversary, mine and the boss.
The invitation is open for all. But some of them have already been snapped up! First come first served!
In stock is still 4 15" woofers, about 12 6 1/2 midwoofers and 12 6 1/2 midranges. Also there are the 22 pcs 5" midwoofers. As I told the gang. You want them you can have them. I will be willing to do parameter testing if you can't.
They come into Ottawa with me and you get them where and when. If we meet somewhere fairly central or if you live on my way into town no problemo. I drive all over Ottawa's west end anyway.
Hey happy anniversary Rick!

Hey happy anniversary Rick!Mark
That would be John!🙄 Unless you somehow knew it was mine and Karen's 25th later this year as well?😱
Here is the story.
I've been storing a great many drivers for longer than I care to admit to. Some since 1993!
So they are there for the asking. Take them give them a good warm box to sleep in and they are yours!

Hi Mark,
I'd be interested in a pair of each of the 6.5", as well as the 5". I can measure them and post the results for those who end up with the others.
Thanks,
Owen

Hey guys... sounds like I missed a great 1st meet! Schedule has been pretty hectic but I will do my best to make it to the next one.
Mark, if those 15" aren`t spoken for yet, could you let me know?
What are they anyway?
Thanks!
Eric

Ok for all who want drivers I'm doing a driver run tomorrow evening. Any and all that want some drivers email me and I will be bringing them into Ottawa. Some have done so already. But anybody else?
my most used email address is:
mwmkravchenko at gmail dot com
Sorry but it's a bit tougher for the spam monkeys to get it this way! Change the appropriate words to symbols!

Don't hold back
Hi all,
Having spoken with Mark about this earlier, I'd like to say that neither of us feel we own the idea of audio diy'er meetings in Ottawa. We both want to contribute, not control. This is not us
If you're coming in from out of town, have a new project you'd like others to see, feel left out because other meeting times haven't worked for you, have too much beer on hand, or whatever, just go for it and suggest a meeting place and time that suits you. That's the beauty of a tool like this forum!
If everyone decides at some point that there is enough interest to do regular meetings, some structure can be applied then.
