Technically worthwhile, though IME only females can tell any difference, so for cosmetics I added a removable false baffle with chamfered holes to mimic recessed.
It is dependent on how the driver is designed. Some are better flush mounted others are designed with the surround and frame creating the termination for a surface mount.
Thanks everyone. I’ll start small with the smallest hole, just to be safe.
I don’t want to necessarily start a new thread for this next question. How well do you think sewing together some of those blue moving blankets would work for lining the insides of the cabinet surfaces? We have a big stack of them and my wife suggested she could sew them together, to get a decent thickness.

Well, don't fill the box with the blankets.
Ideally, you are absorbing the sound waves bouncing between the inside walls.
After years, I use acousta-stuf, pricy, but works, and I overstuff, always................
Hopefully your box is small.
There is the filling for pillows at walmart.....
Or a medium to soft throw pillow that you are willing to sacrifice.
Actually, if others think this is a good idea also, maybe attach 4 or 5 of those moving blanket layers to all the interior walls, shouldn't hurt, then add filling........
Or boffle ?
Where you have the blanket hanging top to bottom in squares, maybe .5-1" between sheets ?
Just an idea.

Looks like JBL agreed with you . Sometimes, anyway.

Higher frequencies with short wavelengths are most likely to be perturbed by surface mounting. Flush mount tweeters and don’t worry about woofers below about 2khz.

"it's slightly more ragged in the highs. I did test it years ago (with the first pair of Alpair 10.3 that i used) to see it myself, and it's minimal (+/- 2dB in my test), but it's there." (waxx)

Drivers like the big bezel Markaudio should really be rebated, the newer ones, it is unnecessary, but it does look prettier.
As said, dispersion matters. While related to size it is also related to come shape and more. The better the higher frequency dispersion the more rebates become useful (sonically).
The shape of the transition from bezel front to baffle, and the height of the step you would rebate in, relates to the wavelengths of frequencies that will be affected.

On a scale of importance from one to ten, I would rank flush mounting drivers in about fiftieth place. I still do it though...
I would have thought so, but when I removed the bezel on my pair of Lii's I was surprised at the subjective and measurable difference, and not for the better...
Thank you everyone for your comments.
The idea behind the moving blankets is, I have them, the wife volunteered to sew and fit them for each internal flat surface, they’re free. I’ll experiment and see what my ears think.
