How cheap can you get? ~$60 assembled pair w/ bamboo enclosures - offer advice.

OK, on the top side of the board, cut the two traces right on the inner white square. These are the outputs from the Speaten filter to the input caps of the Tripath, the two yellow caps.

On the bottom of the board, remove the heat sink, then cut the two traces leading from the 6-pin input connector. Then run jumpers from the L and R inputs on the connector to the bottoms of the yellow input caps. Please do a much neater job of it than I did 🙂 (I'll clean this up at some point...)

Hey Chicks,

I bought 5 of these thing-a-mo-bobs. I've taken one apart and plan to start on another in a little while. I think I might sell the other 3.

Anyway, have you measured (or can you measure) the Fs of the drivers out of yours? I measured mine and one driver is 85Hz and the other 102Hz.

Pretty big difference! 😱

I will have to see what the other drivers measure.

You must be mistaking me for someone who knows what they're doing 🙂

To me, the speakers were just a bonus that came with the Tripath amp & SMPS. I just built cabinets for them based on my JVC FS-7000's, guessing that, being the same size, they might sound OK in those cabinets. They do, but purely by luck, not by any design.

The speakers appear to be fairly high quality, it's odd that they would be so different.

Since I listen mostly to vocalists ( www.thepenthouse.fm )

Thanks for the link Chicks! My wife listens to Martini in the Morning all the time. Very similar station out of L.A. Nice to have another choice.

I'm looking back thru the thread to find what you made those cool boxes out of. A couple of years back I bout some bamboo cutting boards for projects, but they were soooo expensive.

A lot of nice bamboo seems to be hitting the market now at great prices. Thanks for posting these.

I listen to Martini... too, but can only get it @ 64kbps on the OmniFi DMS-1 streamers that I use.

Some other good (IMHO) choices are Dinner Jazz Excursion, Mellow Radio, and Music of you Life, though I'm not really "old enough" 🙂 Java's Bachelor Pad on WEFT is pretty swingin' too, on Friday nites.

Yeah, I'm looking at this http://marketplace.hgtv.com/Product.aspx?Lid=1899-263225 as a sub enclosure, for this http://www.rjbaudio.com/Cerberus/cerberus.html design. A bit smaller enclosure, but could be tuned, I suppose. One of the clearance stores has a circular version, but still wants $25 :cannotbe: Don't think it will need a separate amp, I'm currently running a T-amp through a Phase Linear PC-50 passive sub to a pair of Minimus-7's, plenty loud for my tastes.

The bamboo waste can is cool. Too bad it doesn't say how big it is. (or did I miss it?)

FWIW, 3/4" bamboo plywood goes for about $160 a sheet. Something to keep in mind when looking at all these bamboo products.

Pano, I'm envious. I just decided against building in bamboo some LP cabinets I have in the works because it was going to cost me about $230/sheet (to be fair, also because I was warned the bamboo ply would be quite likely to warp in my non-centrally-heated shop unless I cut and glued the panels within about 30 milliseconds of unwrapping the ply). At $160 I might have taken the chance.

Regards.

8" X 8" X 11-3/4", or round 'bout 12 liters in volume:

http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1640&f=27408

This may not be thick enough for a sub, probably about 7/16", which is the thickness of the cutting boards used for the sides on the small speaker cabs.

Edit:

Just followed your site to audio-magus.com, and found the Glow Sub One. Wow, wouldn't that be a perfect match for these little speakers!

Hey Aengus Get thee to Seattle!
Check out Bamboo Hardwoods. I think it can be had for about $120US a sheet, there. You might want to call first. I did not see any warping problems in Washington.

Chicks - thanks. Hmmm.... 12 liters. Well the crazy little Tang Band W6-1139 sub works well in a volume almost that small. I think I have a pair stashed somwhere.....

The glow sub is cute as a button! Alas, I have not heard it in action - just seen it. But the Glow speakers themselves sound very good. Very pleasent, easy to listen to. Look cool, too.

The PE catalog shows the TB's smaller sibling, the W5-1138SM, working in an 11 liter enclosure, with an f3 of 39 Hz using a pair of 2" X 8.5" ports. And it's in stock. Hmmmm.... I may have another item for the XMas wish list....

At today's exchange $160 USD = $205 CAD

Ah, I remember the good old days when we were above par (last year, as a matter of fact).

I made one of the few sound financial decisions of my life then, and went to Seattle and bought a bandsaw. Not sure that my truck would carry enough plywood to justify the trip even absent the current dollar disparity, though.

Hey, pano - want to bring up a couple of skips to next years VanIsleDIYFest?

Regards.

Does anyone have the dimensions of the amp board? I'm considering fitting one of these into an existing enclosure that currently houses some fairly mediocre, 20+ year old car radio chips.

About 2" W X 4-3/4" L. If you use the metal mounting brackets, about 5-3/4" L. Needs about 1-1/2" height clearance for the speaker connectors/wires.
