How better is a Turntable compared to a CD?

So, it's not that TT has a special quality above that of digital, but that digital most times is carrying a monkey on its back, to a lesser or greater degree ...

In the end it is the result that counts. I can enjoy 50p vinyl records I bought at the corner of the street and have to bin many CD's or just put them on when I am doing something else and just want some background...
It's decades they have been saying digital will get better, it can be done better and bla bla bla but the facts are always the same.

Df. if you look at the signal from the source no doubt you're right, but then analog may just do something so different in a system that the equation shifts. Theres is something in a system that a TT can do that no digital source can replicate.
If you take something objective like distortion ans Noise, then digital wins, but what has that to with music and natural reproduction..?? The magnitude of those parameters says nothing about how natural a system sounds.

Personally I have heard really excellent TT's and also really good digital setups. Both can be mindblowingly good. But somehow really good TT's conway the emotional and rhythmic parts of the recordings better than their digital counterparts.

I credit this to one specific small, but very very important quality that TT's has over digital.

Natural reproduction?

What? Compared to artificial insemination?

Boy meets girl; stylus meets groove?

But somehow?

Just how? Are you holding something back from us other then empty post content?

There is nothing to convey but information. So far you are doing even worse job then broken vinyl record.

Wow almost 3000 posts on an interesting subject, but it's getting no deeper than I know more than you do. Mine is bigger than yours and I know all about all products in the world.
Not a single person has seen the nature of things and brought to the surface why TT just may have the edge over digital medias when it comes to natural presentation.

And again, empty devoid of any reason.

I saw a loose thread, pulled on it, and the whole thing just unraveled.

I've seen no posts in vinyl camp with engineering or math know how explain any manner in which vinyl system outperforms a digital system.

I've not seen anybody in vinyl camp with technical know how demonstrate vinyl systems natural performance as better in any way compared to digital system.

Sure, vinyl can be very good listening experience, once practiced at ignoring the intrusive pops, clicks, and rushing sound of stylus rasping out the groove.

Yes, it's very unfortunate that this is the case, and a big part of the blame can be laid upon the designers (of digital gear), who seem to be blinded by the excellent technical results they can achieve with little effort.

I was lucky enough to get CD sound 30 years ago that was easily the match of the best that analogue could do, so the means were always there for good digital sound to be realised. Like you, I was terribly frustrated by the fact that conventional CD sound was always pretty awful, over the years, no matter how expensive the setup. It will require a major change in the approach, the thinking of not just the makers of exotic, expensive machinery but also those responsible for the everyday implementations, to break this deadlock ...

Simply because music doesn't exist in measurements! You will NEVER see it, despite what gurus say. This is not a comparison between a car and motorbike to which one is faster....
Sadly all the people who think that CD is better are, unfortunately or not I don't know, also those who have a lot of confusion in mind and cannot distinguish between a physical sound (i.e. invariant) and musical sound (i.e. non invariant).

I like you already! Keep posting! :drink:

if you switch from your tannoy system to what system?

if you use subs under 80 or 60 hz and NOT higher, and you learn how to integrate it, the sound is as hifi as anything.

but im curious, why a sub that makes a 60hz frequency couldnt do harmonic overtones?
If I look at the cones of my 15 inch drivers they hardly move when reproducing, say, a Timpani. A sub cone just flaps about with large excursions which I believe is too slow to produce those stunning overtones of a Timpani when wacked.
If you are happy with a sub, thats OK but I'll never give up on BIG speakers.

Please, this is back-to-the-80s stuff. You are saying "I just know it's true and if you don't know it's true then you just don't know enough".

See if you can muster up a little more respect for others.

The following forum is an interesting read and validates my hunch that vinyl has become the darling of the yoof, those too young to have purchased 'new' records.
It's us old farts that remember those days and are glad we are not there.

I used to help out a DJ with his gear many years back. I saw him fairly recently and we talked about the upsurge in vinyl. He told me he bought a decent dual cd deck a few years ago but he said that people didn't enjoy the sound as much, they spent more time chatting at the bar than dancing etc. He gave it a few weeks then went back to his vinyl. He couldn't explain why any better than we can he just knows what pays and what doesn't. I tried to press him on this and all he could say was that CD's sounded flat compared to vinyl. Like two pints of the same beer poured an hour apart, they look the same and weigh the same but taste very different.

Yes, digital sound is boring, boring, boring!! That's what it sounds like, so much of the time - and that's not because you're now listening to the recorded sound as it really is, the 'true' sound that the musicians heard when the were playing ... but distortion, pure and simple. It's not an "obvious" distortion, but a subtle, behind the scenes, debilitating, undermining distortion which sucks the enjoyment out of listening to the sound ...

I am afraid but it is not about lack of respect. It is a fact that I have noticed.
See if can you explain what is the difference between physical sound and musical sound and more importantly the consequences?

If you are so sure we could bet some money? Bring whatever you want and will see.
I think it is quite the contrary. People try to find all possible defects of vinyl to convince themselves CD is better. The reality is CD is inferior, it has always been and the turntable has to be just a decent one. If the analog set-up is seriously good (which doesn't mean those horrible mega expensive turntables which don't solve anything) then CD is vastly inferior.... 🙂

Unfortunately you can never compare the two without knowing which is which, a waste of time.

There are some interesting theory's knocking about that's for sure. One bloke told me he thought it had something to do with kinetic energy being more directly translated into sound with vinyl. Another said it was because digital went through more correction and more circuitry in general. Who knows, I certainly don't but I can say I have a small number of lp's which sound way better than anything I have on CD or lossless file. I prefer digital when using headphones though, that I am certain of.

You saying that a bunch of drunken Jocks out for a good time actually give a shite whether they are dancing to a cd or vinyl?😀
Vinyl is a DJ thing, nothing to do with sonic superiority.

They have probably never seen a turntable but they read in the forums, magazines and are informed! So they know....
I know a lot of (especially young) people who swear they cannot tell the difference between a CD and mp3!

Hey don't shoot the messenger, i'm just repeating what the guy said, he does this for a living and they aint all on booze if you get my drift.

I don't think his audience give a dam about sonic superiority, they just want to have a good time 😀
