How better is a Turntable compared to a CD?

Thought you guys had a more reference digital set up to do comparisons!

I'm assuming this is directed toward me?

If so, I can explain how it works. Our Club has it's standard system which is fairly decent by anyone's standard. However, for special meetings or events, we bring in professional or very high quality audio gear, if called for. Many of our members have very "High-Zoot" systems. I haven't checked lately, but two of our members had their systems listed in the Athens (Greece) Audio Club's "Top Systems in the World" for a number of years. There are others that have pretty darn special systems as well, and we certainly have a number of members that are well known in the Audio or Recording Industry.

Best Regards,
TerryO

Oh that's what I thought!! Pretty cool!!

Hey Terry, just tell 'em you're an honorary Canuck, that'll establish a "reference" !!
Best
Don

Hi Don!

Will you send me an email with you current e-mail address? Everytime I try to send something to you at your old email address, it gets bounced back!

Has the Arctic Snow covered your igloo yet? I sure hope you put aside enough Whale Blubber to last the Winter. It's been staying in the low-mid
80's here in Seattle.

Best Regards,
Terry

You must know that a 300rb is not optimum ( mass) for a 103, frankly i have never heard or know of anyone running a stock 103 , everyone i have ever heard ( myself included) had at least the body modified.

Again, body not body, heavy arm or not lighter arm, I have tried the 103 in many configurations and sounded more or less the same, which is not bad at all.
But I don't understand one thing, what is the type of performance you expect from the 103? Maybe we are not sync'd 🙂
Do you expect it to perform better than let's say a $1K MC cart?

What is your digital equipment Stefano.

I going to try a shiga clone cd drive, the best digital source I did listen to used one. The owner confirmed me that the drive did just as much as a good DAC. I would say it is not possible but I willing to believe it now I did hear his equipment.

These digital source are outdated and even back then they were the WORSE sounding.
I had marantz CD 17, 17 mkII, 63 KIS and others. Had the sony for a while.
These things were real crap even back then. Bloated bass, not controlled. Bloody midrange and lack of resolution on the highs.
If you still have those...:happy2:

Even iPad will sound significantly better nowadays!

I said that already, I don't use digital anymore as at this level makes no more sense anymore.
I used esoteric SACD, audio research, other the the other marantzs listed, marantz sa7.
You think is enough ? 😱

Here.

Stefano to me a MC cartridge is a bit of copper-wire a magnet together mounted in silicon-rubber with a stilus from aluminium or more exotic material as beryllium. And a stylus tip.

The stylus tip is the part that can reveal more detail out of the groove. Here visualized.

Here a picture of the famous Shure V15III MR microridge ans the Shure M97xe that I have my self to.

Measurement of the MR tip

Measurement of the eliptical tip. See the harmonic rise at 5kHz and compare it to the micro ridge.

Where I am going too is that the average High priced MC cartridge doesn't cost more to make than a DL103.
So I say a cartridge cost 250 Euro. So there are a lot that cost 1000-2000 Euro.

To say 1000 euro cartridge sounds much better because there is 750euro more profit to it is a NO BRAINER to me.

Again I can not rate sound quality to the price of a cartridge.

So Stefanoo witch MC cartridge has a fine-line tip and sounds better then digital audio and has a normal price tag?

I googeld these. The reviewer likes it more than the dl103.

I like this information confirms my exspirience with the goldring 1012gx.

The Denon have finally announced that they are bringing in the ‘R’ version of this classic cartridge into the UK. This features higher quality wiring, a lighter coil assembly and a slightly lower output and is considered to be the finest current production version of this classic model. The main sonic improvement over the standard version is a more refined and extended top end (with less grain) whilst still retaining the dynamic and involving sound of the DL-103. Detail retrieval also increases as does the solidity of instruments, especially in the lower mid when voices and instruments sound almost as substantial as the real thing.

I've had a couple of 1042's over the years but it was an unlucky cart for me. I pranged one stylus after having a bit too much to drink. A cat we rescued pranged it's replacement when I only had it a few week's. After that the prices for replacement stylus went into silly territory for a cheap cart. I next tried an Ortofon 2M Blue when they first came on the scene but I didn't like it, far too bright sounding - sold it on. Next I tried a DL-160 which I still use years later. It's not bad sounding, more detail than the previous carts and a bit more laid back. I wont spend much on vinyl replay because I listen to digital far more and my record collection is only a few hundred albums - never counted but probably a bit less than 500, a lot of them are poor quality UK pressings from when they blended new with recycled vinyl during the oil crisis.

I've a Buffalo ESS DAC, Shiga Clone for my digital rig.... Vinyl rig is Linn LP12, Aro and Grace F9E cart, phonostage a diyed EAR834....

For me the biggest difference is how the music affect me... When I listen to Vinyl, I very often get into the music very easily... I start playing air guitar, air drums etc... With my digital rig, I still can end up playing air guitar etc.. but it's a lot less frequent.. A friend of mine summed it up very nicely.. " When I play vinyl I feel a lot happier and more relaxed.."

Still I do like digital a lot.. When I'm testing equipment, cables etc.. I use mostly digital.. so convenient to hit the repeat button and skip tracks....
