Hornresp

Hi Mario,
Did you have any trouble with Hornresp installation?
Hornresp is delivered in a self extracting archive.

When you click on the setup file downloaded from David's page, you are probably presented with a security dialogue:

Click the [Run] button, then you'll see the self extractor:

You can, or maybe you should select the default installation location for testing purposes...

Hi Mario,
I recommend you download the Setup.exe to your C drive, as your user may not have the propper permisions on the D drive.
Beyond that your security software could possibly be blocking access. I see a security shield logo added to your downloaded Setup.exe files, to me this suggests the security level may be set to restrict access to the file by default, exe and zip files are commonly classified as potential threats.
Is your windows user profile an admin?
What security software package are you using?
Does the Hornresp.exe file shown in your screen shot run?

When you click on the setup file downloaded from David's page, you are probably presented with a security dialogue:

Hi Dan,

I see from your screenprint that you retain superseded versions of Hornresp. This is not really necessary, unless you like collecting things and filling disk space :). I don't do it myself - I only keep the latest release.

Kind regards,

David

Beyond that your security software could possibly be blocking access. I see a security shield logo added to your downloaded Setup.exe files, to me this suggests the security level may be set to restrict access to the file by default, exe and zip files are commonly classified as potential threats. - This appears to indicate that the file is blocked as it comes from another computer. I do unblock it, set all permissions and it would still not run.

Is your windows user profile an admin? - Yes.

What security software package are you using? - Avast, even added the .exe to the exclusions list, no result.

Does the Hornresp.exe file shown in your screen shot run? - No, produces the error message above ( the screen in my previous post ).

Hi Mario,
As you are an admin level user on the PC my opinion is that your security software is likely what's preventing you from installing and using Hornresp.
I'd recommend you contact the Avast support group or seek help on their forum...

Hornresp is very simple; when the Setup.exe is extracted to the directory of your choice for the first time you will have the the following four files:
HR_f.png~original

When the Hornresp.exe file is run you will see the welcome/version info:
HR_ver.png~original

And then the input window appears:
HR_input.png~original

At this point the folder you extracted Hornresp into will contain a few more folders for your data:

If you make it this far, you've made it. :D

After some typing and  and sawing and gluing and :drink: you'll finally be prepared to...

Hello Dan,

thanks for helping me with this issue. You actually got it right, after reading your last post I thought an active shield may be blocking a needed download, so killed Avast`s web shield and file shield. Then went on and downloaded the .exe and it worked fine in my drive D. I suspect the web shield has caused a missing download and thus the non-existent path string.

Thanks again, I needed the diffraction simulator which looks fantastic!

Hi Dan,

It's all backed up to three machines and the cloud, I can even recover prior versions of my database should we hit a snag with a new release.

You don't take any chances, do you? :).

Should you ever be interested in an offsite backup of your source just let me know.

Noted, thanks for that. The current release Hornresp source code is backed up on two USB flash drives. If I happened to lose both of those, and the development copy on my PC, then 45 years' of work would be gone forever.

Perhaps I should be taking more precautions with this irreplaceable data... :).

Kind regards,

David

Hello, can this kind of "dipole horn" be simulated with hornresp? If not, then what about if the woofers would be enclosed in ~40l boxes?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I can't simulate such construction myself. If someone wants to try to simulate it, it would be much appreciated!

Woofer could be for example Eminence Deltalite II 2515. I was thinking of using such horn in the 100...130Hz - 500Hz band.

Is good/adequate 100Hz from a 0.5sqm mouth possible?

Floor loading effectively doubles the mouth area to give >70Hz as the lower limit.
Probably just about right for good performance down to 100Hz.

Is good/adequate 100Hz from a horn length of 1m, possible?

half wavelength of 100Hz is ~1.7m.
1m is considered as a truncated Horn.

You want it dipole in the sense of an open back on the drivers? This is easy to do in Akabak - let me see what I can gin up...

Legis,

Here is the sim of your horn in Akabak - your guess of the 130 Hz to 500 Hz usable bandwidth is pretty close. I have applied a 75 Hz BW -24dB/oct high pass filter to control cone motion and increase max power. This sucker can get very loud. The sims below assume 2 pi space with speaker sitting on floor or driver 0.25 m above floor. Drivers are mounted at 200 mm distance from vertex to driver centerline (as measured parallel along horn side wall).

Here is SPL vs Freq for 2.83v at 1m (drivers connected on parallel):

Here is cone excursion at xmax with 55 volts of drive:

426792d1404407001-hornresp-legis-horn-fr-displ-xmax.png

Here is corresponding SPL at 55 volts (130+ dB!):

Here is impedance:

426794d1404407001-hornresp-legis-horn-fr-impedance.png

This is the effect of reflections from back radiators if you place horn with mouth 2 meters away from a back wall:

426795d1404407001-hornresp-legis-horn-fr-2.83v-1m-wall-2m-back.png

Of course you will want a low pass filter of your choice, maybe -24 dB/oct BW at say 550 Hz?:

That's interesting, Hornresp does not predict as much gain on the top end for a OD FLH. Can you post the script? Akabak does not calculate using parabolic expansion, could that be the difference?
