Horn for FR?

Still no idea

@djn, hey man, how tall are these babes?

Would a 3" version of the Tang Band with the bullet phase plug suit a waveguide like the ones in the pic? The driver is brilliant down to 300hz and looks like the 4" one with just a smaller basket and cone and same power rating. A pair of tall desktops like these would be awesome. Would a sub driver be happy on that angled lower horn panel with a cab behind there? Will a flare suit as the aesthetic touch desired is one with curves?

The horn is 5’ 6” tall. I bought these and never measured the response. My gut tells me that a 3” drive would be too small for that horn. With a 3” driver, I would go with a back loaded horn for a desktop.

Actually, if you are building speakers for the deck top, you might want to think about vented cabs and a subwoofer. These are the speakers I built for my deck and I run a KLH sub. It sounds fantastic.

I have a few BR speakers hanging around and some more in planning. It will be nice to have something different on my main desktop

Maybe a back loaded can work if it ends up looking a bit like a phonograph. With the 3" driver at the small end and the horn curl back around like this to be in line with the driver. The sub can go in the box part. Would anyone be able to give a rough idea on how large would a back loader end up for around 250-350hz?

To approxomate the necessary mouth size, the circumference of a horn mouth is approx the lowest extention.

350 Hz >> 32 cm diameter.

250Hz >> 44 cm diameter.

But note that one usually leaves a bit of margin at the low end and that the best ones have the mouth smoothly terminat ewith a significant “round-over” at the edges/termination of the horn.

Cool man, thanks again. It's going to be quite a journey for me in setting up point source systems for the new areas now that most renovations are complete, I have two desks and one counter waiting for new speakers, as well as two live/party areas and two portables as my project this year

Dave, would you recommend any sort of horn/waveguide system in conjunction with the pair of 7" Wavecor subs? This is for the living room counter. Floor standers are out of running due to high kid activity. Even the subs are going on the counter, so a build that incorporates the sub drivers into the design is highly desired. The phonograph type setup will look cool. So will a pair of seashells. No limitations on difficulty level for construction. Think along the lines of no effort or expense spared for this pair of speakers. Would you be able to help select the FR or coaxial unit for something really out there in looks please?

Don't discount 3d printing for smaller parts, and a simple wood turning lathe can often turn really big front horns. There are lots of threads on here but check out Synergy/unity horns, from what I have read they offer some of the absolute best point source offering. Gedlee also made some amazing 'monitors' with constant directivity as a main focus.

Vermouth, this is my reason for looking for something exceptional. I come from a boat building and boat furniture background and I have a Creality CR6 Max and a CNC + laser as well as good knowledge of CAD and long experience with working with curved panels, composites. I have a wood and metal lathe as well as one with an 8' bed that can be further extended. Well equipped workshop for developing a marine amphibious AWD gokart, which is my current occupation

Thanks for the tip on the synergy horn, that just might do it

Sounds amazing. I bought a big Jet lathe to turn horn up to 1.2m diameter, although turns out this is really hard!

Joseph Crowe is really good and sells cad plans for horns of all shapes and sizes.

A DIY audio guy set this up:

Someone also developed a 3D print horn entry for Synergy, as this is almost impossible to machine without 5axis. I have it somewhere on my computer if you need.

If you're new to it, I highly recommend MiniDSP or Hypex Fusion if you want active crossovers and the ease of tweaking things on the fly.

The 8'er can turn XPS up to 2m diameter. I only have space for 12" diameter on the counter though and for this project would like to do it using my 4mm ply in multi petal form. Some along the lines of curved wooden panels being brought together into a rigid monocoque horn
