HLCM - Horn loaded compact monitor

Thanks Pooh for this input.

The Fs is 70 Hz on this unit, so I assume your long mid-horn allow it to have very low cone exursion. Hadn't you good result with higher Low pass filter (800 Hz or more ?) or is it just your new design ? (IIRC you used to XO the 8PE21 at higher than 1 000 Hz).

Some big radial midrange horns

Big radial and CD midrange horns 😛

The Community RH60 with Altec 288-16G won this battle. The EV (60 degree white whale) HR6040 second with Altec 299, then Community BRH90 with TAD 4001. Also notable was the Faital 144 in the RH60. The JBL radials aren't in the same class and the biggest horn the Keele EV HR9040 CD horn was the strangest of the bunch measuring excellent with the Altec drivers but sound was dreadful.

Nice to be able to try so many options! Congrats.

I can find no info on the Community RH60 online. How large is it? What are notable characteristics, aside of being radial? What are the xo points you ended up with?

A while back you were super high on JBL CMCD cone-driven midrange drivers in horns. How would you compare the midrange you were getting then vs what you are getting now? Probably passband dependent too. I continue to work on my cone driven midrange horn, but certainly keeping an eye on CD midrange horns too.

The RH-60 is a fiberglass horn made by Community Light & Sound. It is aprox 24" wide by 22" tall by 25" deep in the 1.4" Altec version. The horn was made in 2" and 1" versions also. I have the 90 degree 2" version too it's called the BRH90 - BRH = Big Radial Horn - It's a 60 degree CD/Radial with both conical and hypex flares. With the 299 driver shown in the pictures (Pascalite dome) I use them from 600 Hz up. The 299 actually can be used down to 300 Hz in this horn but my midbass horn captures (85-600 hz, Fane Studio 10) that range better than the compression driver. Compared to the CMCD we are talking about this system where I have a superior midbass low midrange system crossed to a horn that takes care of the entire upper range. This sounds better. Differnt Horny Animals 😀

I plan on Dampening the RH60 further and giving them a few nice coats of flat matte camo black. The Altec drivers I have I am undecided on exactly what I will use. The alnico driver (radial plug) actually sounds best here with the symbotic phrams but needs a tweeter horn. The 299 (tangerine plug) with the pascalite is a bit hot on the top octave. I have a new pair of GPA aluminum 288 phrams coming and will likely use those. The 288 diaphragms I have now I had to repair the lead wires and I don't think they are quite up to snuff.

Hey Pooh.

Wanted to pick your brain about this horn: Community Pro SH494 http://www.communitypro.com/sites/default/files/SH494_spec.pdf
Couple with a Community M200 driver.

On page two there is a beamwidth chart. My tweeter horn is 80x30 HxV dispersion. Looks to me the SH494 might be a good fit using it sideways, long side vertically, so beamwidth at 2kHz (xo point) is about 80 degrees and has a gently narrowing beamwidth from about 400Hz.

How does it look to you?

Cheers

just got done installing new great plains audio diaphragms in the alnico 288g drivers. the dowel alignment sleeves presented a bit of a problem. the gpa phrams are not machined properly and the alignment holes in them are too small. i thought these were made from the original altec tooling.. oh well - nope

went back to my traditional method of installing diaphragms where i loosen all the mounting screws and run pure tones into the drivers while tightening and aligning the dome. after a couple of hours of fiddling i'm getting some really pure tones and low distortion. these were actually touchier than any drivers i have done before with the big emilar ec600 coming in a close second. if you don't align your compression drivers like this you probably aren't near the full potential of the driver.

don't be surprised if you have to make some paper shims to really get them producing purity. i've found it's always worth the time of fiddling with these beasts

The best "pure" mid range I have ever experienced was with the White Whales loaded with EV-DH1506's. Maybe EV horns like to be used with EV drivers ?

I have the 1012's and although they sound good within their range (600-3K) above that they require massive EQ. The Altec 299 and Faital 144 in the same horn much less so. I plan on trying these 288g's (widest bandwith with least eq of all my mid format drivers) on the 9040s. I really like the 6040's better though! They load the bottom end better and don't sound as "phasey" as the 9040

I'm actually trying to build a 2 way here lol - what I think is going on with the 9040 in my room is the constant directivety and radiation is so good and wide I'm getting crosstalk cancellation and a "phasey" sound. The 6040 not so much and these HR60's are insanely good - i can get another pair of them if you are interested.

went through the rounds with 288g and three radial CD horns, the community light and sound hr60 is my favorite.

here is the faital pro 1.4 lth42 elliptical tractrix flare horn. really clean

no eq 1/48 smoothing pink noise three feet 400 cycle high pass 😛

this horn is begging to be used with it's little brother sth100 and celestion cdx1730 crossed in at around 7k with the midbass horn crossed in around 650

I would have (mistakenly) though the HF144/LTH142 combo good all the way up. Thanks for your post, it is very informative. The "decade for horn" rule still applies, even though you were able to get a tad bit better !!

Here is what I ended up with. Lambda TD15X in Barzilay cabs, 350hz round tractrix with JBL 2441, and Big Heil. Crossover at 700 and 7000. I've never measured it, but out of all the Altec, JBL, Klipsch, Jensen, and eWave horns I've had, I like this combo the best.
