IMHO it's correct... as it's worked for me with my bass boxes. I think you can only say it's correct once it's been built - but I'm not a fan of having the mid-range in a bass-reflex enclosure (sealed/OB/sealed TL/horn?). I do use my bass boxes without a high-pass filter at the moment and I've had no trouble - we currently feed them both a mono signal for HT as well - and also have no problems.
IMHO (yet to be proven), I think you'll probably find the rules don't apply so much when you're using a good mid-bass driver as a mid-range only speaker.
I think you'll find that if you have a not-so-robust speaker (I have a Lambda and I'm going to be using a PHL3451 in a later design), then you might have to be a little calmer in your design specs. Using the PHL1220 as an example, if you're going to feed it a 10 watts, then you could probably get away with running it full-range (no high-pass) as far as exceeding xmax is concerned. You'll probably get some distortion below Fs though. But above 150Hz you'll have some pretty clean 100dB sounds. If you're going to hit it with 100W, then you'll need to high-pass cross at about 12dB/octave at around 150-200Hz to achieve safety for you driver. This will afford you 110dB above the cross-over point.

Mike,
If you've got the money and patience you could always try the C89 from Accuton...
That Accuton a good driver ? Because i really dont like that stupid grill 😀
But it plays in a sealed cabinet, its efficiency is not much better then what i have though 🙁
And if i buy another Morel i can always swith up the cabinets if i decide to try a Dipole. ALthough i dont think my Hi-Vi woofers will be happy pulling Dipole bass duty from what i gathered from LR's website.

Sorry, Mike.
I couldn't work out how to put a smilie (the one with the big cheesie grin that you had) on that statement. From listening to one of the Kharma range up close I was reasonably impressed (for the price... hmmm?). And others have spoken up for them. But too much trouble in my opinion.
At what point is your crossover (mid to bass)? Unless you're down quite low, then you'll probably find the 1220 from PHL ($117 - Zalytron) or the 1360 ($88) will give you excellent performance in at 9 litre sealed box.

My crossover is anything i want . ALl active variable with a DCX2496 in the wings.
I need to sleep on this purchase decision me thinks. before i do something stupid and end up 1000 dolars poorer and 0% further ahead.

sounds like a plan stan 🙂

Most excellent, congrats.
My Mids are a little thin and weak from the Morel being only about 84 DB efficient and trying to keep up with a 94 DB ribbon and 91 DB bass cabinets. And it shows with the position i have to keep the gain Pots on the Rane SAC-23 crossover. Bass at 6 the mid at 9 and the tweeter at 6 for close to balanced sound.
So, are saying that they SOUND thin and weak to your ears, or simply that you have the gains set differently to match them up nicely? Do they get loud enough for you overall? If yes, and they sound good to you, why bother spending more money just to make your gain knobs match...they don't have ears do they?
I am going to rebuild the top end and add another Morel MW166 per side to bring up the efficiency so my set will look like this going from the bottom up -WWMMT- .
If you are going to change things, I think this route would be an excellent approach.
You are happy with your bass, and highs...good. Do the Morels sound good to you? Is it just that they don't get loud enough for you? Where do you have them being crossed over at? What type and tuning of an enclosure are they in?
