In my early days of Hi-Fi I did start to hear a few differences. Bell wire is CRAP. Just replacing it with decent gauge wire did make a HUGE difference. Above 2.5mm T&E mains cable there was no difference. Once I'd got decent speakers, I could then start to hear differences in the quality of various amps. Interconnects are similar, as long as its good quality cable with gold plated plugs, you aint going to get much better. RG45 co-ax with reasonable gold plated plugs are just as good as £1000 snake oil interconnects. I actually sold a pair of £200 interconnects because they were awful when compared with my home-made RG45 versions.

Inexpensive system then you are sure millionaire

Don't forget you're talking to experienced perfectionists here.

Most of them have systems that you would have to pay tens of thousands of dollars to equal with off the shelf equipment. If they can be equalled with off the shelf equipment.

KatieandDad - I fully agree with what you say.

DF96 - The quantum bit gets me too. But then I suppose most people have no knowledge of the quantum world.

It's my next amp
PASS LABS INT 150
I bet you say that is not good enough for you?

Its not all about amps.

Get yourself a Marantz CD63/67 and work your way through the thread on this site regarding modifying it. Then build one and you'll get a very pleasant surprise. It really will open your eyes. Shame most people will never hear how good a CD can be.

Try getting a pair of B&W 802D's and tri-amp them, then you will experience a whole new world of sound. But even the mighty Nautilus can be bettered.

I did have an Arcam FMJ amp, can't remember which one which I had upgraded, when I inherited the Pass Aleph 4, the Arcam was just RUBBISHED bu it.

The 804's aren't brilliant. I found them a bit dull and uninteresting.

Even the more modern 683's have a bit more life in them. The 804 has better bass but the newer 683 has adopted the mid range from the nautilus.

I think that kind of remark is kind of unnecessarily offensive and, in any case, totally pointless!

The OP stated that swapping a fuse caused an amplifier to overheat. The price of equipment ($10 to $10K) is NOT the point! The possible mechanism is, and was being discussed.

You have now dragged it way off topic!

My point is that you cant hear any difference with cheap commercial amps.
