Hi Efficiency Speaker Question

Is it possible to make a fairly hi efficient speaker (say 94 db) that approaches hi end audiophile quality sound? I see brands such as eminence, Faital etc but I dont know who makes the best sounding stuff. I am thinking 10 inch three way.

Absolutely. The best pro sound drivers from B&C, 18 Sound and Faital Pro, to name a few, perform every bit as well as high end drivers from Scanspeak, etc. Be aware the driver parameters are usually skewed towards high output rather than going low in a small box. DSP removes that limitation.

More possible, as the resulting efficiency needs to be maintained only across a narrower spectrum in a 3-way. However, linearity depends on excursion, the minimisation of which (at the lower band edge) requires a driver that's as large as possible (e.g. 15"), while also avoiding pattern related issues such as beaming at the higher end.

Also, a driver with a rigid straight cone geometry is more suitable as 3-way woofer while a curvilinear paper cone is more suitable for 2-ways.

I had considered a hi-eff. 10" for a relatively compact 2-way with horn and almost bought a Monacor driver (SP-10A-302 or SPA-110PA) that look pretty good in modest sized cabinets and have been part of many 2-way kits.
Yes, they still have a relatively high fs but that´s a compromise you have to make.

Here´s a couple of options that might give you an idea (includes some with the aforementioned drivers):
Strassacker hi-eff.-kits
92-94dB sensitivity are doable with "hifi-drivers" too as you will see.

Not many dome tweeters manage 94 dB / 1 W, so the speaker will probably use a horn tweeter or at least a waveguide on the dome tweeter. That will sound different than the dome tweeter on a typical high end loudspeaker, even if the only difference is the dispersion pattern. Not necessarily better or worse, just different.

There is some info lacking to make anything but a slightly helpful reply.
1.6 cu ft is that the total enclosure volume or whats available for the bass driver/s ?

What kind of spls are you looking for?
How high up will you run the subs?
Look up 10" drivers from Faital, 18 sound, Beyma, AE, BMS, B&C etc.
Plug the parameters into winisd or similar and see which one gives you the extension you seek in the volume you have available.

And you need to make a choice in wether you want to use a compression driver+Horn or dome tweeter, in the case of a horn, the dispersion pattern of the horn will decide what size midbass will fit @ xo point.
And will normally make it a 2 way since you have a sub. Finding a 10" high efficiency driver that manage 94 db after baffle step comp means it will be a midbass driver pretty much. And in need of a sub below.

If you use a dome tweeter with a waveguide the size of the waveguide will decide the mid/midbass size to match the dispersion pattern again.

If you use a dome tweeter without a WG there starts to get limited choices in tweeters but there are some good candidates around fx: Bliesma T34, Satori TW and a few ss/seas.
Although most of them cant play cleanly at the vlomues a cd/horn can.

And yes there is plenty of good sounding pro drivers out there, with enough efficiency.
But the 10" bass driver and 1.6 cu ft cabinet size might make it a bit tricky it that is total available volume.

There seems to be more than one sub available!
If you´d let them play up to 100Hz the naive in me thinks it should be very easy to make an efficient 2-way with a 10" (or 8-12").
The Monacor SPA-110PA I mentioned before will have f3~95Hz in 45 l sealed.
Question is, what is high-end and does that unit suffice. I´m sure there are plenty of other drivers that could fit the bill.
Maybe a AE TD10M or Wavecor WF259PA01 for something a little more upscale?
Using a DSP for active XO widens choice even more so.
