I've always thought those were a strip of a type of bakelite, but mixed into a fiber board to give it flexibilty and other toughness for abuse against cracking.

I know the material as Paxolin (SRBP) which is used in valve bases, turret boards and terminal blocks.

Same here in the Netherlands, although it's also called hardpapier (hard paper) here.

Since the OP is in the UK, you can get sheets of the stuff from Presspahn https://secure.presspahn.com/Cart/150-srbp-paxolin-p1/a3-sheets . They also do tagboards https://secure.presspahn.com/Cart/151-tag-boards/srbp-tag-boards and a whole lot of interesting materials by the sheet.

When you saw phenolic/SRBP/Paxolin you get parfum de London Underground.
FR-2 was used as the ONLY material for PCBs for decades before FR-4 became a standard.
Some poorer countries (like USSR, where FR-2 was called "Getinax") have used it until the late 80s.
