I've always thought those were a strip of a type of bakelite, but mixed into a fiber board to give it flexibilty and other toughness for abuse against cracking.
Phenolic.
There are two types: Paper phenolic, which is more brittle. It is darker brown and this one looks like it. The other is cotton fabric phenolic, it is quite flexible and lighter brown.

I know the material as Paxolin (SRBP) which is used in valve bases, turret boards and terminal blocks.
It's a phenolic resin bonded paper laminate.

Are you going to fix it? That'd qualify for a "what did you last repair?" entry. Rebuild out of the same material seems dubious...thanks thats it -
We call it Pertinax
Same here in the Netherlands, although it's also called hardpapier (hard paper) here.
I read that SRBP sheet is also known as paxolin sheet, pertinax sheet or bakelite sheet: https://www.cccdirect.co.uk/product/srbp-sheet

Since the OP is in the UK, you can get sheets of the stuff from Presspahn https://secure.presspahn.com/Cart/150-srbp-paxolin-p1/a3-sheets . They also do tagboards https://secure.presspahn.com/Cart/151-tag-boards/srbp-tag-boards and a whole lot of interesting materials by the sheet.
The company is in Bradford despite its German sounding name

When you saw phenolic/SRBP/Paxolin you get parfum de London Underground.
FR-2 was used as the ONLY material for PCBs for decades before FR-4 became a standard. We always talked about FR-4 in PCBs, I never even knew the cheap stuff had a designation.
Some poorer countries (like USSR, where FR-2 was called "Getinax") have used it until the late 80s.
