Hermes-BBB/Botic cape for BeagleBone Black

Yep, I just desoldered them all and double-checked. Something is definitely wonky - I can turn on and off the LED labeled "3" from the command line (e.g., echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio31/value) but I can't control the other two LEDs at all.

I think I'm going to give up and order a new Hermes. I've desoldered and replaced pretty much everything (including that gigantic header, which was a major PITA) and reinstalled Botic on the BBB several times. Exactly the same behavior every time.

I had similar issue when I had received my Hermes: One of the LED didn't want to light up.
I resoldered one of QA chip responsible for this LED and this solved the issue.
 
Interesting. One of my LEDs refused to light up as well. I gave up trying to find the cause.

Even with the same Hermes/Cronus boards, those LEDs can not be lit up when connected to a particular BBB (actually BBG) as shown below.

The BBG failed in turning LEDs on in the picture has a problem of causing failure to boot from external SD cards, probably due to inappropriate setting of GPIOs, though I have no idea how to correct it. Despite of this deficit, it can be normally up and running when booted into eMMC.

I'm still trying to sort out what I should be seeing if everything is working correctly - from the Botic driver support thread it appears that the LEDs labeled 1-3 may or may not light up unless you explicitly tell the BBB to enable them. But the EN led is supposed to light up if the Botic driver is loaded. Couple of questions:
  1. Should the EN light up on power up of the BBB/Hermes, or only after the BBB has initialized (I.e., OS has finished loading)?
  2. Will the EN led come on even if the Hermes is not connected to Cronus?
  3. What are the make/model of the LEDs? All my soldering/desoldering melted one of them.
 
Hi folks! I have a BIII used as stereo (IVI) and also have a BBB... So thinking to give a try to hermes/chron botic...
Where can I found guidance to choose the right rhea module for my config?
My understanding is that the 22.5792/24.5760MHz Rhea Pair can handle 192kHz bitrates, while the 45.1584/49.152MHz pair can handle up to 384kHz. So given a BIII and a BBB, it seems like the 45.1584/49.152MHz is the more flexible choice - though I have yet to actually listen to 32/384 tracks . . .

There was talk some time back about a Hermes MUX - i.e., a component that would let you use a single Cronus and switch between two Hermes boards. Not sure if anything became of that. So you'd have to roll your own "switch" or buy 2 Cronus boards and 2 Hermes boards, I think.

You need two sets of Hermes/Cronus boards, one for BBB and the other for Amanero, respectively, and Otto II from TPA does work for switching between them. Below is an example of this situation in my B3 box, though the placement of boards is cluttered because of later addition of Hermes-Amanero board. 😛

It's alive! Many thanks to Brian for a new Hermes board. Soldered it up and everything lit up. To answer my own question from earlier, lights 1-3 turned on immediately on power up, and the EN light came on a second or two later, once the row of blue leds on the BBB started flashing.

BTW I'm using the EN LED as an indicator of BBB being ready for use on the front panel of my DAC case, routing wires from the header pins soldered to the through holes. If you follow this idea, you might be required to do desoldering/resoldering again. 😉

I use EN and led 1 on the front panel. A minor observation - the led intensity will vary depending on how many are lit. So if you want all your indicators to be the same intensity it may be easier to tap different BBB GPIO pins and give each its own driver.

Brian, I think I understand Cronus Reclocking, I have the Amanero-Hermes-Cronus setup, and quite happy with them. What I was looking for is the device or bridge, so to speak that connects my Beaglebone Black to Cronus to correct the timing, if I understand it correctly. I thought this device is what they call Botic. Please correct me if I am wrong. So when I get that, then I will order another cronus. I already have an Otto II for the switching.
