Last night I swapped out the pots.
It was too late to try it but tonight I've had a chance to have a quick listen.
First impressions are the 10k pot has no HF roll off in fact the passive offers more detail.
The mid range is definitely cleaner and bass seems tighter than the active pre.
There seems to be more depth of field it does however seem to sound a bit clinical?
My curiosity now is levelled at the dc output caps in the dacmagic.
I haven't opened the unit but from reading other threads it seems they could be unbranded or Hova branded 470uf
Does anyone have an opinion on whether swapping them out for better caps and beefing up power supply caps could help?

Those 470uF coupling capacitors seem way over-sized for a 10k load on the RCA outputs.
The balanced outputs though should have a larger uF value, and their 470uF value is about right.
All you need is a high quality bipolar 10uF 35VDC capacitor for the RCA outputs.
Suggest this one as very good: Nichicon UES1V100MEM but they seem to be out of stock everywhere.
I could mail you a couple of new ones if you like, just for the RCA outputs only.
They are through hole leaded parts.

Thanks Rayma I would give a resounding yes but I'm using the XLR mod.
Its based on using pin 1 GND pin 2 V+ pin 3 left unused.
The idea is it bypasses a set of op-amps used to combining and filtering for the unbalanced output. xx27?
I would swap out RCA and xlr caps whilst the board is out along with power caps but only if you guys think there is something to be gained

Hi Rayma
If you like those caps I believe they are in stock at HIFI Collective if you are UK based?

Ok, then the Nichicon UES series value of 470uF at either 25V or 35V both seem to be available.
The 25V version is: UES1E471MHM, and the 35V version is: UES1V471MHM
Use the 35V version if it fits your board, otherwise use the 25V version.
It is likely that your DAC has smt 470uF capacitors.

Those 0.1uF can be left in place, and likely won't do any harm.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the Nichicon UES.

smt? is that a surface mount?
The 470's are listed as 470uf np elco guessing thats non polarised?

Cool thanks Rayma
So drop 10uf on RCA and 470 for the xlr.
I'll take a look in the parts box and my old modded marantz for power caps.
Its a long time ago but i'm sure I used various black gats and Panasonic fc/fm caps hardly used it.
Its been sat in the shed for 8yrs so they could well be cooked by now

Yes, Surface Mount Technology = SMTsmt? is that a surface mount?

They do have to be bipolar electrolytics. We should reserve the term nonpolar for film types.
