Help getting into headphone systems for serious listening

Thanks for the thoughts. Yes, i've managed to audition quite a few different 'phones whilst looking into this, and whilst they have slightly different characters I've concluded that mine are pretty good as these things go, in fact better than many. So, I won't go down the rabbit-hole of buying pair after pair, chasing something that they won't deliver.

The lead is an interesting thought. I would be surprised if it made much difference but I was thinking of making my own already, just to get the length that I'd like, so indeed nothing to loose. There is an odd bayonet fitting on the 4-way jack plug that goes into the headphones though, so that might take a bit of hunting down.

Cheers,
Kev

The little male jack is available online. So, yeah, you need to hunt that one down.

If you build the external cable, another area for modification could be the inner leads.

For example, I used a thin (0.8mm max. outside diameter) silver-plated copper, stranded wire to replace the stock inner cabling. This is a more laborious task, but easy enough requiring only patience. Just make sure to remove the headband pad carefully, because you'll need to stick it back in its place.

The end result after re-cabling (inner and outer), can be a slight but noticeable improvement in overall clarity.

*an alternative type of wire, can be 24-26AWG solid-core, copper wire.
I've tried it as well and while I like its sound (somewhat warmer than the silver-plated stranded one, but equally transparent), the cable is rigid and not very practical.

Thanks, I shall have a look around for the plug.

I probably won't be tinkering with the inner wiring, TBH I'm not a great believer in such things, but a DIY external lead would be useful for practical reasons. There are quite a few important properties there; a custom length, flexibility and tangle-resistance would be quite high on the list, as would not acting like a stethoscope.
