Hehe, well you do need a preamp somewhere! I'm sending my mic back today - they took a while getting back to me re. returning it. I'll come back on here when I receive the replacement!

Re: Re: PS400 Phantom Power
I've got a bunch of these Panasonic capsules (a few different types) and I've been agonizing for a long time about how exactly I should hook one up to my PC.
I've got a few different soundcards, including a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum EX, some other Audigy 2, an Ensoniq SB16, and a couple old SB Live cards.
If I could get all the parts I need to build a good yet very simple preamp at Radio Shack I would do that.
If I could order a mic preamp kit with the circuit and the components cheaply, I'd do that.
Oh, I've also got an M-Audio FastTrack USB ( http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUSB-main.html ) and I'm thinking that might be the best interface since it's external to the PC. Maybe with that all I'm lacking with my Panasonic capsules is some way to power them?
I've seen TONS of info about many aspects of these questions in a lot of different places, but I haven't yet managed to figure out a simple solution that will work for me (cheaply). If I had more $ I'd just buy a Behringer EMC8000 + preamp, but I don't as I'm an unemployed college student presently...
I guess I'm not very good at reading electronic circuit diagrams, though I'm ok at soldering.
I'm also not sure what kind of circuit is needed to connect the pan. capsules to an XLR mic jack. If I did get some kind of external mic preamp, would I still need to power the capsule with a 9v battery? Would 48V "phantom power" that some preamps provide work with the panny capsules?
Do you have any of these Capsules I'm talking about SimontY? Guess you won't need them since you've got that Berhinger EMC8000.
I saw somebody was using a Berhinger EMC8000 mic with one of these M-Audio FastTrack USB devices without a preamp, that's what inspired me to get one (the FastTrack) thinking it would work with one of the capsules connected directly, that doesn't seem to work though. I don't think the FastTrack has phantom power, so I'm not sure why the EMC8000 would work with it?
Sorry to poke my nose in on your thread here SimontY, but maybe my questions are somewhat related enough, I thought, that it made more sense asking here than starting another thread...
Hi, could you show me how you've got your Panasonic capsule setup with the 9V power?Svein_B said:I seems the PS400 power module for the ECM8000 is phantom power only, it is not a preamp. It will therefore connect to the PC soundcard mic input.
An external preamp, with phantom power, would be better as it would use the PC line input, which will often be better quality than the low-level mic input.
I am not saying it won't work. I am myself using a ultra cheap panasonic capsule with a simple passive power from a 9V battery. It works OK with my notebook mic input, but a lower noise floor would have been even better.

I can't find how to EDIT my post, strange ~ nearly every Internet forum has this function...
Svein, I wanted just to add that I found your link: http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/microphone_powering.html#soundcard in another post, thanks.

Powering Panasonic WM61-A capsules
critofur: That link gives a lot of useful information about powering microphones.
Here is a simplified, practical diagram for wiring the components:
Here is one of my microphones. I took a cheap $2 microphone to provide the cable and stand. Cut the plastic tube and removed the original capsule and fix the Panasonic capsule with hot-glue. The battery and components are at the base of the stand secured with duct-tape.
Edit: Works really nice! (Posts can only be edited just after posting)

2K2 = 2.2K?
And, do you happen to know how one would wire that to a male XLR jack for plugging into an XLR mic input?
*edit* - looking at that link again, it looks like a more complex circuit has to be used if I want to use it with XLR...
My XLR input doesn't have phantom power. So I guess it's not clear to me how I could use the 9V battery power with XLR... Maybe I better stick with the 1/4 "line level" input, but then I would need a preamp?
My M-Audio USB interface has "guitar level" on the 1/4 input also, I wonder if that will work without a preamp, with the 9V powered capsule?
