I have 4 ESS Monitors that the woofers are dying. I would like to redesign and use the Heils that are in good shape. What is a reasonable cross over frequency to use with these AMTs? I have experence and the equipment to test design and build speakers.
About 2-3khz or higher if 3way.

Do You want to sell two of them ?
I'm looking for the AMT tweeters for a long time now. The pricing of the new units is ridiculous

My buddy Chris turned a set of AMTs into a very nice 3-way. There were some restrictions on the design (had to use the original bass drivers & the newly redone grill cap. Used an Eminance 6" for mids. Worked out quite well.
Next one we do will use Audax PR17 as mid, and will probably be active to non-ESS bass units.

I experimented with them a lot...
The good thing about the dying woofers is that those speakers sounded horrible - compared to what is possible with the tweeters. Luckily, the rotten surroundings of the woofers give all Heil AMT freaks a final reason to throw those speakers away and start a new project!
I never felt happy with the suggested crossover frecquency of 1.5...3 kHz - way too high imo. I tried lots and lots of different woofers and midrange drivers, but I always felt the AMT would play even better in a two-way-setup.
So finally I settled on the Eton 11-581/50 HEX and a crossover frecquency of 800 Hz (24 dB) - MUCH better than any 3-way-setup I've ever listened to.
The 11-581 has an awful peak at 2 kHz which is why many people never considered it and failed to realize what a great driver this actually is...
Also, you might be concerned about the low crossover frecquency... Ok, my speakers won't take hundreds and hundreds of watts, but they have such a good resolution and sound so wonderful - you just don't need disco like SPL to hear every detail of the music.

Dont think I want to sell any of them.
I was considering a 6.5 MMT design and crossing at 1200 Hz. Maybe the new Usher 6.5 or an Audax HM170 CO, I have experience with the Audax. Getting the phase right on, one octave on ether side of the x over would be the key. I am using a subwoofer(s) so deep bass is not needed. I have a center that I built out of 2 HM170COs and a Hi Vi RT2-C. It sounds great and is a match for the heil above 3kHz, the mids are MUCH clearer (the voices are scary clear) with the Audax so I am tempted to go with that.
BTW the one thing I never liked was the VERY muddy bass the AMT Monitors deliver. My testing with a CLIO indicates alot of group delay in the PR system in the audable bass range.

The Pass Connection
Here's a little history on ESS and the Heil Air Motion transformer, and a possible source for information.

from what i know the AMTs can handle freqs lower than most. a friend uses them in an active system. the AMT have a small SE tube amp. the bass is 4 8" peerless CSX cones push-push 2 in front 2 in the rear driven by a Pass amp. The XO I think is 24db 600Hz. maybe lower. he has an XO from Marchand and is constantly exprimenting. lost touch with him a few years ago though.
Ciare Loudspeaker contest winner
Hi,
I remember reading about the 4th Ciare Loudspeaker Contest in Italy in a diy audio magazine I borrowed from an Italian friend of mine.
The winner used a Heil tweeter. (It had won 2 loudspeaker contests in one year).
If you are interested in it, drop me an email and I'll scan everything and mail it back to you.
Good luck with the project! (whatever you end up doing)
