Turns out I forgot to adjust the bias resistance to the zener reference. The schematic is set up for 30 volts, not 12--which is what I'm using. So, I dropped that sucker down from 10k to 1.5k and now I HAVE SOUND. Very good sound, judging from my little test speaker.
I'll let her run awhile and then hook up to one of my horns. This could be a match made in heaven.

Cascoding sounds like a great idea. What's keeping me from going all out, though, is the fact that the heat levels in my jfet ZV7-T are minuscule compared to the larger transistor models.
I'll be experimenting with cascodes soon. This concept will work well with the midbass speakers.
