Group order of switched ladder attenuator? Anyone interested?

Hi Ray, I tried the 0.1% Welwyns and they sounded terribly bad.......

That's a pity. The price is nice though....
I was thinking about using them in my Elma ladder switch.
Maybe i'll buy four of them and hook 'em up to simulate one attenuator position, just to see how they do..... 😀

I'm having a hard time finding an (on-line) store that sells all the calculated values of my ladder, and also a good brand.
Any tips/hints anyone? Are we up to a resistor group buy yet???? 😀

Ray.

What about Riken resistors? I used them in mine (pictures earlier in this thread)

What the world needs is a decent $1 resistor. It seems they are 20 cents - the Dales, or over $3 for the Rikens.

Lessee, for a Bosoz I need a stereo, balanced, ladder- 26 position: thats over 200 resistors and an 8 deck switch.
With $4 resistors that's $800 plus what? 150 for the switch?

For the same but series, it's still over $400 for the resistors....

Hi,

Now let someone tell me they've actually tried cheap carbon comp resistors, el cheapo non-magnetic metalfilms and other obscure too cheap to be trusted brands that made their system sound so horrible they immediately went back to that old rotten sounding plastic film pot...

IOW, do your first build with off the shelf resistors at a cent or two a pop, then determine what positions of the attenuator you use most frequently and try some "golden ear super brand unobtainable in E96 series resistors" at those positions.

That's no use for a series ladder, I know, but those aren't the better type anyway.

If a miracle happens then you can still decide to rob a bank...and fit the resistors of your wettest dreams, right?

Cheers, 😉

And I wouldn't be surprised if S&B TVX would sound better anyway😉

Also Angela has some old Holcos too. Maybe some that Percy doesn't have? Good point though- those are the reasonable choice.
Frank- Once I get into something as exotic as switches I began to wonder if the cheaper resistors would make it no better than a pot. You seem to say it will be an improvement over a pot with about any resistor-that's encouraging 🙂

Hi,

That's my experience anyway and that's also what I hear from others.

IMO those expensive brand resistors are fine but some of them deviate more than a little from what I consider a " neutral" sound, i.e. no sound of its own.
Therefore these are often best suited as a means to compensate tonal balances or perhaps other deficiencies in a given system.

Naturally tastes will differ from person to person but all in all a well built attenuator with reasonable quality resistors is a very good place to start.

Cheers,😉

Hi,

Anyone interested in going for the Shallco or TKD 47 position stepped attenurators this time?

Thanks, Nick

I just wanted to let everyone know that there might be another group buy of only the ladders this time if the interest is high enough (25+). CBMC has posted a thread on head-fi.com and there seeem to by quite a few people interested. So post here if you missed out the first time or want a couple more.
