The picture contains the Blackgate STD capacitor. The board that he used when he made his latest chassis contained a 1500uF Panasonic FC, which will be contained in the kit. The FC Panasonic 1500uF capacitors work great when used with a Blackgate N cap in the power supply.

The power supply capacitor in the kit should be a Blackgate N 4.7uF capacitor. I currently have enough for about half the kits, and will continue to try to source more for all the kits.

im thinking about using bg std or fk (yikes$) instead fc.
what do you think? is it worth it? will i hear the difference?
 
i dont know if its been brought up yet, but are the ins/outs/etc spaced out enough for those oh-so-nice screw-down terminals i see everyone use on here? just curious, cause i've wanted to use those on a project and figured it would be a nice simple method of connection instead of soldering/resoldering every time i mess around with them, along with simplifying a bit with 6-ch setup. if not, its more than alright too. just anxiously awaiting the chance to build up a professional looking gainclone.

They are spaced 0.2" apart, which is the standard spacing for terminal blocks (~5mm). The input pads on the power supply pcb are spaced wider, so you will not be able to use them there, due to the later pad size.

For the input terminal blocks, you might have to mount them upside down, from the bottom side of the pcb, since the resistors are close to the edge on the top side. Alternately, you could mount the resistors on the bottom of the board, and terminal blocks on top. It shouldn't make any difference, since the pads are plate-through-hole, allowing you to solder to both sides of the pcb.

If you decide to use the large Blackgate capacitors, you might have space issues with terminal blocks, but the standard Panasonic FC 1500uF capacitors will work fine for accomidating the terminal blocks.

Electrically, a soldered connection is much better, and some have said that it is sonically better, but the terminal blocks are much more convienient. I used them in my prototype gainclone, and still was quite happy with the sound.

You have the +PGND and -PGND reversed, as I made a mistake on the silkscreen in the first picture that you have. This should be corrected on the pcbs.

As for the signal and output ground, they are tied together with a small trace under R2, so you do not need to this externally. Just use the OG and SG pads for tieing to your source and output.

The CGND connects to your chassis, central ground point, where the AC ground comes in.

Peter did some comparisons, and likes the 1500uF FC capacitors, so I have decided to use these for all the kits. They cost a bit more, but this works out good with the current count of orders.

I am not making any promises that the kits will include the BG 4.7uF N type cap, as I am having trouble soucing enough of them, BUT, I currently have enough 4.7uF N BG capacitors to put with the first half of all the kits. If I can find more of the BG N capacitors, I will include them with all the kits. The increased order quantities have allowed for me to do this with the extra overhead funds. The BG caps cost 10x the amount of the Panasonic FC caps, but are said to make the performance superb. When I added them to my prototype, they greatly improved the sound.

So, if you are in the first half of the kit orders, you should have a pair of 4.7uF BG N capacitors with your kit, which is said to be the best component to go with 1500uF FC capacitors. Peter used these in his prototype, and you can see his review here:

I will try to get the BG 4.7uF with all the kits, but no promises yet. I also ordered some Nichicon Muse ES bipolar caps 4.7uF, which should be similar to the BG 4.7uF N caps. I will run some comparisons.

Important Announcement

Important Announcement:

I will stop taking orders for kits (not for pcb sets) tommorrow morning, due to the large number of orders received thus far. If you want to order a kit, please submit your order before tomorrow morning.

The reason for this is that I don't want to get too backlogged in putting together kits and mailing them out. After a decent amount of kits are mailed out and I am able to source more parts for the kits, I will start taking orders again.

I am also getting married on the 27th of this month, and want to be finished all the kit orders before this time, so that I don't have to be putting kits together on my wedding night.

Orders for pcb sets will not stop, and will continue until I run out of pcbs, and have to order more.

If you miss out on the kit orders, don't worry, as I will definately offer them again in the future, since there was such a big interest in the group order thus far.

I am still working on getting all the confirmation e-mails together for the orders and will mail them out soon. I have been busy ordering parts, as I have had to order from 8 vendors to get all the parts for these orders, and am still in the process of ordering.

Drop me an e-mail if you have any questions.

One more thing: I have bought packing materials, and will start getting kits together early next week, when the last parts orders come in. I will try to have a decent amount of orders ready to ship out, when I get the pcbs a week from tommorrow (12th). If you ordered early, your order could ship out on the 15th. I will work hard to get all orders shipped out quickly.

congrats on the wedding! And thanks again, for offering these kits. I think we've been needing this for some time. I look forward to your next kit offering, hopefully by then I'll have a bank account again, and can get paypal working to order a set.
