Hi Jeroen,
Yes dull brittle looking joints can be caused by heating the solder for too long. The heat drives all the flux out of the solder and it doesn't flow well.

The boards were still a bit of a challenge to solder (for me of course). But when finished they look and feel very solid/reliable.
