Love the thread Twitchie!
I’m in for an Aleph J, B1 pre, B1 Nutube, M2x with Ishikawa input (other inputs still to be built, waiting for parts to arrive for an Aleph J SS build, and an “I gotta build one of those when I have time” list that keeps growing!
I agree completely with Zen Mod that this hobby further expands on my love for music, and that music for me is a key to tranquility.

Anthropology of Greedy Boyz
Historians have long argued for thousands of years over the origins of 'Greedy Boyz' but many agree that their search function returns this thread by 'The Artist Formerly Known as Choky'

to all greedy boyz
What I found most shocking was that a young and naive ME was front row witness to the birth of this notorious label

Slowly gaining a cult-like following, the movement was ultimately legitimized by Nelson Pass himself when he publicly recognized there was a group of unshaven, sleep deprived maniacs who lived in front of their computers and soldering irons by calling them by name on public record
(Post #63 in the F7 thread):
First Watt F7 review
Many members would compete for the title of 'Most Greedy' and furious reverse engineering and schematic hypothesizing of Nelson's First Watt amps ensued, but ultimately Zen Mod proclaimed himself as the victor and owner of the title 'Most Greedy Boy of them all'

Most Greedy Boy, of them all... or (there is no) DEFiSIT of Papa's Koans
Zen Mod would then go on to create no less than 75 variations of the DEFiSIT and cement his grasp on the crown while all others were furiously scrambling to build sissy amp after sissy amp.
Thanks to Papa (Nelson Pass) for giving us reason to be Greedy and thanks to Zen Mod for leading us on the path of the pursuit of Greedyness and Dodoessesness

I'll be honest, I'm not greedy for amps per se, I'm greedy for how they work and why, with whatever parts are in flavor. It's a fine line, this guy Nelson Pass, he's a fairly heavy hitter here (Pass Labs forum?) and he's got a business of making amps. I'm certain he navigates this place. He's got a give/take. Hell, it's been a wonderful advertisement, every DIYer with a libido and a working iron wants to taste something with that name plate.
In the old days here, back when I would never dream of writing, It was pretty simple. The alephs, a crazy SOZ build, high volt preamps. All more or less a continuance of magazine level DIYing.
And then First Watt. The 'kitchen table' effort to make some amps, 200 at a time. Hang around, it might become a topic.
And then SemiSouth... That was the moment that 200 turned into...... "when we're done" At that point it was just a business and the chips fell where they were.
Circling back, in the haste of making so many things, the dialogue shifted from advice to unavailability. I get it.
And the forum has carried on! Enterprising folk, the real engineers here.... they've made do. There's so many parts now (SIT) that aren't even in a Pass product. But it's not the same place it was back then, some sort of frontier. It's still wild but also a little more managed now, not that it would have ever been predicated.
Just one man's deluded opinions!

frankly, I'm maybe ( well, not maybe - for sure I am) naive, but I can't see any trace of management , here in Papaland
I mean, I'm not even sure in which context I could search for management here (most probably I wrongly got it as something with slight negative prefix), except in occasional moderating work ...... obviously, excluding all the work needed for last Lottery Happening , as example of typical Pass's giveaway to Greedy Boyz
you're really his Flock (while I'm always and again under Disgrace ) .... instead of making regular FW products with some parts, he's clearing his stash, sending Goodies here
I know he had enough Sony VFets for proper FW product run, I know product would be worthy of label, I know he's not lazy to make it.... but no - there is no FW product with Sony VFets and there will not be ....... unless some new stash of parts is found somewhere on East ( as previous one)
and yes, you're right - this bunch is no more greedy for amps per se ...... excitement of doing something is all ..... amp is just vehicle to move one's a$$ in new and mysterious ways

+1...
...and exercise some never-before-used brain cells. Considering where I'm told my head is all day, I suppose I'm just being redundant.

I don’t know if any any audio industry member that has been more open and giving with there vast knowledge then Mr. Pass and Wayne Colburn.
I have never felt that forum has pushed anything on anyone. It has been one that is very inclusive to builders at every level.
ZM is just the leader of all greedy kids, and I’m a card carrying member.

I’ve always had a hard time referring to myself as a Greedy Boy/Kid, or even referring to NP as ‘Pa’. Those have always been privileges I felt I needed to earn over time. Sign of respect kinda thing. It’s a silly notion, and I’m sure not anybody’s intention. It’s kinda like they say that you’re not a true New Yorker unless you’ve lived there for at least seven years (or something like that).
Does reading for hours through iterations of ZM et. al. playing in papa lego land without understanding 5% of what they are talking about qualify one for the Greedy status?
One does not understand the details of DEFiSIT but one starts to appreciate that Papa can make a cart pulled by a horse and a mule race through the curves 😀 and then you just want to make more of his little wonders.
After each Papa announcement I get this image of little piglets watching the clock. there is moooore coming GIMME GIMME GIMME...

codyt,
I know what you mean. I’ve been building kits and other projects since 2004, but don’t post much and I’ve only gained enough knowledge to keep myself out of trouble when building. I still feel that this group is inclusive of all, and it is making me what to build more and learn more. I’m taking the leap that is what makes me an old greedy kid.

point is, one doesn't need to own the Train, to enjoy a ride
though, paying for at least one seat gives you precious position of being exposed to Elements

No negativity intended, I was referring to the installment style that harkens back to the series of Zen articles.. ugh the danger of using vague metaphors.
Had there not been a SS SIT there is the possibility that all those sonys could have found their way into FW amps, in which case it's likely they would cost a lot more than $499 😀 But they ended up going to the Flock and that is by all measure a generous voluntary gesture on NP's part.
This is perhaps a good time to step away from the board, and redevelop my own patience with this year's tomato plants, before my own greedy ways cause an intractable case of permanent dullness. 🙂
A well read set of AudioXpress on the bookshelf (you know, that whole ink on paper) and knowing which spine to pull to read about this thing called an Aleph. However, I generally didn't touch "sand" back then because I like my vacuum tubes and who didn't want to shoehorn build a Japanese redesigned Marantz 5b clone or a 6550 UL amplifer? Or electrostatic speakers using PE cutting boards? Didn't build the cutting board speakers or the 6550 (too big, satisfied at the time with EL84 and EL34 tubes), but hat's off to those who did. The Marantz 5b was really nice though. Man, what I did when I was young would probably kill me twice over.
But I kept reading about this Nelson Pass guy and all these sons and brides of Zen part # series. What's this? Light bulbs too?!? These articles would come out constantly taking up valuable space in my magazine (tubes!). Surely, SS Class A can't be as good as a SE Tube amplifier, and I've helped move a pair of basement heating KSA 100 amps and all they were was heavy. And they ran hot. Nice sound, but maybe better speakers were needed.
Then I discovered the internet (it is a series of tubes after all) and Mikael Abdella's redesign of a nice all round SE tube amp over at diyaudioprojects.com.
Soon after, diyaudio.com. Seems like a decent community and I can read about George's Simple SE and Simple PP (both great amps btw). Oh, cool funky junk box single driver Cornu Spiral speakers, give those a try and DAMN all that sound from foam core board and tiny 4 inch cones? People and their reaction to the sound is surprising and not believing.
Oh there is a Pass labs section here too. Still talking about light bulbs, I see...
But I kept reading my magazines. Then someone gave me a couple of pairs of black boards with silk screening that said, "MINI-Aleph". So I build. Wow! That is actially REALLY good sound.
A Mini-A, ACA v1, Aleph J, a MoFo, and purchased a pair of SITs for later, I am now one foot in sand and one foot in glass and one foot in ChipAmps (hold up a minute here...). The only one I still own is the ACA v1.
Slowly gathering, inventorizing, and readying to build number 2 Mini-A, number 2 MoFo, and number 2 Aleph J with leftover devices and components. And another Baby Huey, Tubelab Simple SE, and EL84 SE to eat up more spare parts.
My imperfect planned schedule has been thrown assunder now because of Sony VFET part 1.
Some people knit sweaters; I solder pcbs... and support the delivery industry... and make my wife shake her head because of heavy packages.
So I guess I am old and greedy.
And that AudioXpress March 2002, volume 33, issue 3 is peeking put from the bookshelf at me. You know the one...
