this one?

That is the one ZM. And I bought it for $10 CND because of the one article in the back being part 2 of Jean Hiraga's writing on "Harmony and Distortion". I just noticed the Parts Express advertisement on the back for a 6 foot long planar line source element; my oh my, we've come a long way since.

If you strain, you can see a fresh pair of Tokin SITs in the picture...

😀

Well ZM, nothing is better than source art like yours.

Mine is a reproduction of yours with SITs, not as crisp or as colourful, with added lens distortion, a carpet background, and near inperceptible fingerprints... but otherwise it is in newspaper stand condition and pleasing enough for my aging eyes.

OMG, I just described a magazine in audiophile terminology!

😀

So this was my first Pass amp, the Zen Lite, back in 2005. Totally underestimated the size of that amp:

The second Pass amp, a mini Aleph, turned out smaller:

The Lite's lightbulbs live on in this L'Amp:

There's another pic attached that shows the size of the L'Amp, with a bonus Aleph J in the back.

I also modded one of the rare FW F1J current source amps (new caps, bigger xfrm):

Lastly, an X-J-CCS-BOSOZ:

There are more, I'll have to dig up the pics.

I also happened on the Pass amps by chance, and it started with a Mini Aleph as well ...

After a couple of tube amps (headphone OTL and 2A3 SE) and the restauration of a Revox B710 and B77, I wanted to try some solid-state amps and looked to chip amps for an easy start ... so I got a few LM3886 boards and PSUs from BrianGT, when he still had his "chipamp" site, and because these PCBs where rather inexpensive, bought a set of Aleph Mini / Aleph 30 boards and PSUs as well, without really knowing what it was ...

Well, the dual-mono LM3886, later hot-rodded to run with about 1 amp idle bias, so first watt in Class A, is now sitting in the system of one of my sons, and I built the Mini-A more as an "Aleph Single" with 19V rails and 2.2 amps of bias, because I could ... had large heatsinks ... have converted it to "Aleph J Single" in the meantime, still on Brian GT boards ... and built a number of other Pass or Zen Mod amps in the meantime 😀
Along with a few preamps, both tube and SS, and an EL84 PP, and some more restaurations of classic 70's and early 80's hifi ... And can't wait for SissySIT R.3 now ! :wave2:

Best regards, Claas

Haha, hope I can be a greedy boy also, all the items listed in signature below are still in my possession. Except for the F5, a good friend is listening to that one 🙂
Bought some THF51S because Papa said to do so, oh no, not again.... 🙂

I’m working on it. I have an ACA, NuTube, Whammy, and an Aleph J. If it had started raining earlier I would have had an excuse to spend some time matching transistors for a Stasis. The Tokins are on order, not sure if they will go to monoblocks, or biamp setup, or just build one for me and one for a friend. I should build a Pearl in the not too distant future. Do I get credit for a Pico TM chassis that is sitting on the floor?

Not sure if I really qualify for it, but I only have a pair of ACA 1.1 monoblocks running. I have all the boards and parts for the M2X and the F6, most of the parts and boards for the Aleph J. I just soldered my second set of PS boards together. Just need to buy some connectors and some parts for my speaker protection boards to finish up the monoblock build of my M2X and F6. Building them with separate PS enclosures just because I can.

I also have 2 of the lx-mini crossover kits and 3 of the 6-24 crossover kits to do something with. I am also now looking at getting some tokin vfets for a future project.

Hmm, am I greedy?
I know I'm needy 😀 - I need to have a lot of different amps. Both pre-and power amps.

Currently I have a couple of chip amps, a couple of hypexes including NC400 monoblocks, A Neurochrome amp, 2 pairs of PP KT88/EL34 monoblocks, 1 pair SE 300B monoblocks, 2 working First Watt amps, 2 FWs that just need case and a supply, 1 huge unused chassis, Sony vfet on the way. I also got a passive pre with Slagle autoformers, a passive remote controlled pre with resistor volume, B1 Korg, an unbuilt B1, a Aikido tube pre, couple of phonostages, an unbuilt perl II, 3 prepreamps, several suts, some DACs, a 3 arm double-decker Lenco and an unbuilt Lenco, 4 pairs speakers, from 10 to c.a. 500litres and and and.....

Ok I'm sick I'm a greedy boy 🙂 🙂

Somehow, I have that one too! That is one killer issue. Zen lite, Hiraga on harmonic distortion, which is an extremely 'enlightening' article, btw.

AudioXpress would reliably have some pretty good articles, topics, and designs specifically written for target audiences within the diy audio community throughout the years. For me, the many killer issues had the unusual approach vacuum tube designs which provided sone interesting insights (gee, I never thought of that way). I just re-read one of the early Borbely hybrid headphone article.

As times have changed with the changing readership, so has the magazine.
