Yes sorry typo its Goss and as you say its purpose is to reduce the stray magnetic field. It may not be as good as MU-metal but its better than nothing

Oddly non magnetic materials like Copper or Aluminium have a shielding effect.

It is not clear how ? and how much ? It does exist, presumably because of Eddy currents ( aka Foucault current ).

A belly band around a transformer doesn’t need to be magnetic in order to work. It’s purpose is to provide a low impedance shorted turn around the outside produce a field which cancels the leakage flux (in the far field, anyway).
