Guys. Found the issue. It's embarrassing! It's the 3.5mm cable to RCA that's glitchy. I wiggled it in the 3.5mm end, the one in the iMac and it made all sorts of weird noises/disturbances.
Guess this emphasizes the need for an external DAC even more...

I did find this now though. It's more of an external soundcard than a DAC I guess, but I did notice that the CM6533 chipset seem to be inside many dacs...

Noforce got bought out by Optoma, who promptly killed the company. Sad. Very sad.
It looks like it will work.
BTW, using a
Oh? No speaker/amp protection relay in the output path?
Need to look into the schematic.... there is a 2 second delay on power up before I hear a click and sounds comes out... but that's on the output section, not the preamp section. I don't think it's a protection relay, just a start up relay.
There are no relays on the input selection...
I suppose the OP ought to try the preamp outputs with a stand alone amp.
Or, honestly, have a technician who is familiar with these receivers take a really good look at it.

Actually, the 3.5mm connector per se is not the issue. There are some low end DACs that have a 3.5mm output, so you can get a good quality 3.5mm to dual RCA connector cable. The ideal, IMHO, is a USB DAC that has its own power supply, a USB input, an optical input (for kicks in the future), a pair of RCA outputs (to use as a preamp), a volume control and a headphone output.
I got an old Nuforce HDP-4 that I use with a Tablet to play Tidal HiFi into the preamp of my main stereo. But, I don't see any used for sale.
Are you sure you can't get used stuff from eBay sent to your country?

Then you got the Audioquest Dragonfly which is REALLY good..... and a very good price. It's also small enough you can take it with you and your cell phone...

I can. But shipping costs will be crazy, and on top of that it will get stuck in customs for VAT on both the item and the shipping costs, plus handling fee for customs. It's simply never worth it, ordering from US to a EU country as a private person.Actually, the 3.5mm connector per se is not the issue. I'm considering getting the Topping D10s now... Amazon has that (in Sweden)

Oh, I thought I rediscovered the contacts of that lone relay in the speaker output.
But if it was the RCA cable that caused glitches, everything is fine.
