Reading all of the above said, coupled with my experience with Fostex Fe206 e in ML TL and all other speakers that I've tried, I believe that in this case the best solution is a sort of a FAST: 8" woofer (suitable wideranger) in ML TL + a 3" or eventually 4" fullranger of chioce in a small sealed box sitting on top of ML TL one. 300-400 hz 1st order crossover and voila! You can have the best of both worlds + a happy wife 🙂 just my 2 c. Vix

that work for all styles of music? sounds fun.

i can build anything. im a carpenter and i have the tools. well festool just recalled my new saw so they are sending me a new one. so i am missing my most important tool right now. anyway im also not allowed to work because i married a canadian. the paperwork is about to go through to be sponsered and become a permanent resident. so any ideas you all have would be great. i have the time to look into this stuff but im more of a tell me what to build and ill build it.

thats one reason why i like fullrange so much. its just a riot how much fun it is to build an enclosure for them and have to have someone help you bring them in the room....although my wife put an end to that.

edit: does it have to be a mltl? could it be a ported 8" wide bander?

You mean could the woofer cabinet be a BR instead of MLTL? Definitely. If the wideband is sitting on top, personally, I'd probably just make it a BR so it doesn't get unreasonably tall. An MLTL can be potentially higher-performing (but it needs simulation to be so) but sometimes either you don't need to squeeze the last ounce of performance, and / or you want to build to a given height / width / depth (i.e. a squat cabinet that is also a speaker stand).

There are tons of awesome woofers to choose from. Having a separate top and bottom cab (i.e., you can physically align the driver's centers) may enable you to try a simple two-part series crossover which is the ultimate dummy / purist crossover. (A cheap active crossover is also tons of fun -- why not have both at some point.)

P.S. If you intend a simple first-order (one cap, one coil) series crossover, the impedance of the wideband and woofer should be really close, in my limited experience.

noted.

to be honest i dont even know how id find a point to cross it over at.

lol it would be nice if i can do a 2nd order xo bc then i can get a pro audio active xo

right now im really leaning towards the fostex 83en, 85wk or the more expensive visaton b80.

The FF85WK is an excellent candidate for what has been described in the other thread as a FAST - we've done several - and as was noted there, if you decide on specific drivers and don't need to play around with the XO, then a simple PLLXO and 2 power amps with level controls are all you need.

I think you'll hear the Behringer on a high resolution FAST system.

Not really. My best series XO FAST so far had 4 ohm nominal woofers, 8 ohm nominal mid-tweet. More important to get the sensitivities right, 4 ohm on the bottom means a coil half the size of an 8 ohm load.

does a series crossover avoid the interaction between driver impedance and driver which can plague a parallel network? - things can interact to produce more cone movement than no cap at all. I might try a FAST but need to keep it so it can play a drumkit at decent peaks.

here's the unfortunate interaction of an Eminence Alpha6 on a small conical horn
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
