Hi Tibi (and others),
I did a quick search and I don't know if the following question has been raised already but..
Would it be possible to use a standard potentiometer to control the volume instead of the encoder?
I want to build the volume controller inside an existing pre-amplifier and use the existing volume potmeter to control "your" volume control.
I don't need the other options like input select etcetera, just the volume control.
Best regards,
Bowls.
No is not possible and I do not see the reason to do this.
One of the volume-controller qualities is to get rid of any potentiometer. These are not following a perfect log scale, are prone to quick degradation, noise, channel imbalance etc.
Even used as a voltage controller a potentiometer, later or sooner, will fail.

Tibi
Hi to all.
Just I have finished my case of R2R with DCB1 buffer stage.
I have used another encoder (PEC16-42AAF-S0024 Bourns | Mouser) because I wanted the push switch function for menu.
I see a different working behavior now, than original kit encoder.
I don't know if I have damaged the encoder, but there is no linearity to decrease or increase volume. Sometimes working well, sometimes jumps up or down in reverse order.
Is there any alternative encoder like original that kit used with push switch?

Use your oscilloscope to see any possible spikes on the encoder you just purchased and add proper caps for decoupling.
Each encoder have different capacitive decoupling values. Some do not need decoupling.

Would you mind share some pictures for us? Besides, how do you wire between R2R with DCB1? Thanks!

I actually encounter this with the stock encoder if I change the volume too fast. I thought it was a debounce thing. Tibi can you share how to use capacitors to decouple? I actually intend to use one with a push button to make it cleaner on the front panel.
Recently, I changed the ribbon cable to a slightly longer one (because of the layout in my eventual chassis) but have been having a weird issue even after I verified that the connections are correct. The saved volume level keeps dropping by 1dB after each extended power off (more than 30 secs).

Ristar,
You may try to change C9 and C10 to 22nF.
By save volume level you mean after power off ?
Are you using latest fw version ?

Hi Tibi,
Yes, using the latest one with the new graphic display (it has really grown on me 😛 )
Thanks for the tip on the capacitors to look at!
Best,
cal
Ok... disregard the comment about the volume setting thing. I just reflashed it again with the firmware from before and it's working again. Not sure what happened.

Tibi, just a 47pF decoupling smd capacitors and the problem has gone!

Sorry, I am late to answer about your questions, but I don't make something special, just the 4pin output of R2R going to 3pin input of DCB1 (hypnotize edition).
I have some photos about it and the construction.

Congrats. Fully designed looks, harmonic visual blend. Orderly inside. You must have spent much time designing all those panel details to order. The knobs do not look like coming from a catalog though, self machined?
P.S. What inspired you to name it "Artemis"?
Salas, as you know the "Artemis" is a name of the Greek Mythology.
The main personal characteristics of Artemis (Άρτεμις) according to Greek Mythology was :
- "pure" = pure diy
- "demand personality" = demand design
- "non forgiveness" = absolutely transparent sound with no color!
- "elegance" = harmony design
- "unswerving behavior" = stability function and operation
The combination of Vicol R2R Controller with Salas DCB1 buffer, gives to me the main characteristics of Artemis personality.
The knobs aren't from a catalog, they are hand made (lathe machine ... if that is the right term)...I would like to approach my Aaron final amp look.

I knew she was the twin sister of Apollo, goddess protector of hunt and the wilderness mainly but I did not know all those other things. Alright, very philosophical naming. Nonetheless well executed in practice also. Enjoy it.

Here are few pictures with Maya.
I'll try to make a short movie with full operation to see the beast at work. 😀

Tibi

Hi lemon ,I have some photos about it and the construction.
because i was amazed the beautiful way you made / finish this pre-amplifier
here is a gift for you from me : a custom mod fw.
Hope you enjoy this.

You've called your attachment lemon_fw.zip, but when I download it, it's called lemon_fw.hex. What file type is the attachment?
