The 9 was the first thing I noticed about those devices that was suspicious. The tail just goes too far 😉

Beside that, I can't imagine how somebody can blame distributor for supplying fake devices. Shipping 2000 pieces is a large effort and shipping adds to the cost as well: So how come they were not checked randomly before packing into envelopes?

PS: Somehow it seemed too good to be true and in the end I reduced my order to 10 pcs only 😉

it isn't fair ;

that's true for all areas , not just far east ;

in most cases - you don't have any sort of written agreement or contract for trade ; that's bigger problem , independent of dealer's residence
 
Hi,

I hate to disagree, but for what it is worth I have some of these devices (J & K) with both styles of '9' printed on them.

Interestingly, the 'V' IDSS 2SK389 devices I have are exactly the same shape of '9' as was shown earlier in this thread, but the lower IDSS 'BL' devices do have the more rounded shape at the bottom of the '9'.

I also have 2SA1349 & 2SC3381 which have identical packages to these Fets, and the 2SA also have both styles of '9', so this in itself is not a reliable indicator of whether these are fakes or not.

What makes me suspicious of these pics which were shown earlier, is that in each of my batches of similar devices, the printing is very uniform, with all devices being the same as each other, and this is precisely what one would expect with devices made by the thousand and printed en masse by a manufacturer like Toshiba.

The other 'giveaway' is that all Toshiba leads on these devices are virtually square in section, being stamped out of flat metal stock and very lightly coated with tin, whereas those shown earlier look to be solder-dipped and almost round in section, like pieces of wire.

I know that my entire stock is genuine as they were a gift direct from Toshiba (UK) some years ago when I did some technical authoring for this company, and not being able to source any of these dual devices myself in the UK at that time, their staff obtained these 'internally' for me from within the Toshiba Group.

I don't doubt the honesty of the seller here but I see lots of fakes out there and something here could use clarification.


What can I say except 'told you so'??
I was very mild in outing my opinion that time but I am VERY good at detecting BS and my all sensors were going off big time.
Next time before venturing into such group buy drop me a line.

In certain parts of the world these days it takes very little for an enterprising fella to put a couple of children to work with an injection molding machine a stencil die and a can of silver spray paint and voila' off come your difficult to source parts. 😉
 
I too was dissappointed when I received my parts. I haven't performed any measurements to determine transistor type or function, but the ones I received have clearly been used and roughly removed from a circuit board.

I am posting some pictures of the parts I received to illustrate what am seeing with the parts I received. I am doing this purely to provide factual information about what is happening, as I agree that it is too early to assign blame, and that A'af has not had adequate chance to investigate or explain. In fact, I hope that A'af will find these photos helpful in his discussions with his supplier.

Starting with some K389 pics. No one pin has been cut at the same length.

where it could happen by indidence, that nials or screws are mixed up. Processing semiconductors means sometimes
more than a hundred processing steps in the front-end and more than a dozend in the back-end, each process step performed very well defined conditions with the right equippment and the right process parameters.
As soon has the part logistics is not under control no single functional device would leave the fab and within a very short time the fab would be history.

I don`t understand anything about the process of manufacturing semiconductors but I imagine the labeling of the parts would be the very last process after they leave the factory, maybe even after testing.
This parts seem to be functional devices. They just are not dual-JFETs but dual-transistors (maybe someone could test his parts to really verify this). This and because both types have the same housing, the idea that a batch of them has simply been mixed up before labeling is not too far off IMO. I agree it is not very likely but it also is not impossible and I think this wouldn`t be the first time that this sort of thing happens, even in a big factory.

From whatever perspective I try to see all this, nothing makes really sense or is only nearly probable, so I`ll stop scratching my head over this.
We`ll never know anyway what happened exactly.
Finally this also is not very important for us.
Important is that inside the package isn`t what it is labeled for and that they are not new devices.
A'af said he bought the parts from a reputable company (and not from some obscure backyard source) from which he bought many times before over the years. Hence A'afs supplier has the reponsibility for what they sold him and they should take this stuff back and refund the money (or to exchange for the real thing what I doubt will happen for obvious reasons).

I agree with Zen-Mod here. This is a generalization and not fair.
I have heard of cases where fake transistors have been sold through "reputable" sources / distributors here in Germany. So this can happen in any part of the world.
