Hi guys,

A'af pointed to post #221 (this post), but he meant the instructions in post #211. Please read them carefully, so he can close down the group buy, and send me my goodies 😀

(And Ian ofcourse, then he can start on the Aleph V2....)

Greetings, Harry

I am having problems understanding the following, would be great if somebody could take a few minutes to help me with this!

The highly respected Charles Hansen stated that the V grade with a higher source resistor is perfectly identical to a BL then:

To all of you who are wanting the BL grade instead of the V grade, don't be so picky. The V grade simply has a higher Idss rating. If you don't want to run at a higher current, simply use a larger value source resistor. Then you can make a V grade work exactly the same as a BL grade part.

And now comes my problem: let's forget that this is a dual part and this rule has of course also to apply to all jfets, so also for 2SK170BL/V or GR/BL.

When we look now at the MC-stage of the Ono or of the pearl, the gain of the MC-stage is calculated as follows

gain=<number of jfets> x output resistor/(source resistor+inverse transconductance of jfet)

(this equation is mentioned in the Pearl-pdf and is also used by other members here)

Transconductance of the K170 is constant and about 22mS.

So if I change the source resistor to fix the current, the circuit loses gain and that is of course not equivalent behaviour.

What am I missing here?

Thank you very much, Hannes

PS: above problem poped up regularly in connection with the Ono, where people where using BL-parts with too large currents (cascode collapsed) and had to go for GR-parts consequently.
