Especially in western europe a lot has to do with taxes .
I live in Asia now and the government here subsidizes diesel and has very low taxes on it.
Just fueled up , just less than 1 USD / liter. My pickup only consumes about 5,6L/100km.

I hope the price of Scottish Peat doesn't go up!

Currently £8.50 per 20 kg bag.

Yes it is shocking that Americans have to pay almost half of what we pay in my part of the woods. Can't imagine how they get by 😎

Jan
It is difficult Jan. In Canada I believe I pay about as much as the Americans do. Translating 20 bucks (Canadian dollars) into Dutch gilders at todays conversion rate I believe that is about 31.61 gilders per 20 dollars, give or take. This means you can fill your vehicle up with 31.61 gilders of fuel in half the time I have to put up with.

I wonder if its the right time to convert the house and water heating back to hydro :s

One things' for sure aside from the cost for utilities. They never let us feel content by the way they back and forth and do things that don't make any sense.
Such as sell recourses that are mined in our territory sell it to another nation, then we have no choice (if we must have petrol) but to buy it at higher costs.

Gallon conversions. US gallon is 3.785 litres (3.8 basically) and UK Gallon is 4.55litres. Both are 8 pints! But a US pint is 16 fluid oz and UK pint is 20 then US fluid oz is 4% bigger than UK one.

Confusing isn't it. I have no idea why 20oz is a UK pint when everything else imperial is generally in 14s and 16s.

So American engines are (or used to be) 5x the size of european ones but the gallon is 20% smaller and fuel tanks are tiny (my minivan had a 240 mile range).
