Gain stage and phase

Back in the Usenet days there was a guy (of course it was a guy - females rarely issue death threats over definitions of words) who would go DefCon if somebody used the term "group delay". He would insist it be called "phase noise". I never understood and he never explained this choice. Maybe he was the Unibomber?

Did he write a manifesto about phase noise?

Group Delay might have meant something totally different to him.
Instead of the 'together timed arrival' of different frequencies that started out at the same time; versus 'separate timed arrival' of different frequencies that started out at the same time.

Did he formerly work for the military or a 3 letter US agency?
I remember the guy who heard some kind of sound on the radio, that caused a flashback, and he suddenly jumped under the pool table.

Yeah, not every American of our generation got out OK. I did my two years during those draft times without ever having to point a gun at anybody, but not everyone was so lucky.
