The term "Jap" has been derogatory since the 40s-50s, guys. This isn't some new "woke" snowflake thing. Not at all.
I tried years ago and actually got binned for an angry response to this kind of racism. You come across characters like WOT all the time best to ignore them, they remind me of movies like "Deliverance" or "Southern Comfort".
Two reasons for the term "snake oil", one is the oil from the flesh of sea snakes, rich in mono-unsaturates and quite good for the health, another derivation is an oil seep from the "snake River" somehere in the states, the local people used it as a medicine, and the "medicine men" bottled it and sold it door to door for any and everything.I made all of my cable from wire & connectors I bought & soldered together. No snake oil. I actually found a dead rattle snake outside of my house, so I sliced it open, head to tail, looking for a precious gland or bladder containing the mystical oil, so that I might try some first hand. No cigar. None to be found.
Spoken like a true bigot.
(it's just a name - it can't hurt you)
I gotta tip my hat to the cleverness of that response.
Though I have to admit that referring to Canada as "Canukistan" does make me giggle. If I'm told that is rude or offensive though, I'll probably be less amused thereafter.
This is a twisted trailer for East is East to make it more palatable to an American audience I suppose. East is East - YouTube
Outside of the gang that hang out here I was not sure how many Americans would get that film. But the Late Roger Ebert gave it 3 stars..
Personally I think it's brilliant (even before I met my wife who is Indian and grew up in Yorkshire).

I sometimes refer to you friends to the North as "Canadians from Canadia" (with naught but affection of course). But of course I am an annoyingly silly bastard from time to time. I hope that's OK.
Bradistan? 😉
That film is everything, funny, sad, you name it.......
Four Lions is an amazing film that pushes all boundaries FOUR LIONS - Trailer - Starring Riz Ahmed - YouTube

Indeed. That's because "Brit" has not been commonly used in a derogatory or demeaning way. How about "Limey"? Do you like that one?
Jap - Wikipedia
You can debate me if you like, but the fact is that most Japanese people find the word demeaning and offensive. The fact that "Jap" is an abbreviation is not relevant. Better to just type or say the extra few letters.
I can accept that you may have a need to be persecutory, (know as NIGYSOB) but I have apologised for what was an omissive error because of lack of thought; the inconsistency in abbreviated terms is not something I had considered.
After reading more posts I think it feels as though some are like loaded hair trigger mouse traps, just itching to attack even for the slightest error or blemish.
Crucially modifiers very much affect communication, they revealing the intent of the communicator.

And you're free to do so, of course.
As a matter of fact, freedom is something every living thing is born with and entitled to.
But don't expect me to live under anyone's strict "rules" which I deem to be rediculous.
Because respect for fellow humans and their diversity is not something they taught you in the 50s?
It's not a rule, it's basic decency.

Pharos,
At no point did I assume malice on your part. If I came off as "persecutory" I apologize. Perhaps better to hear this from some random person on the internet rather than be called out on it in an embarrassing "real life" situation. Maybe not.
You can't be blamed for what happened after our exchange - at which point I did begin to get a bit combative.
Honestly, if I had assumed malice and been deeply offended, I would have simply reported your post and moved on.

In these modern times, you're expected, if not demanded to walk on eggshells with some people due to their hyper-sensitivty issues.
This so-called "political correctness" has really gotten annoying, and you didn't offend me at all with your post about japanese stuff.
I'm of polish decent, and surely not offended by being called a polack.
It's merely WORDS for gods sakes.
No one's gonna bully me into walking on eggshells, they can try that stuff on someone else.

Most terminology that is offensive is offensive because of the history in which it was used or because of it's underlying meanings. I get that it may be "annoying", but a lot of this terminology is considered offensive because it has been closely associated with horrifying events that many of us could not even imagine experiencing.
The word "retard" is offensive and not politically correct when used to refer to a person or an idea (it has a technical meaning which is perfectly acceptable, however). I'll be honest, when I hear someone use the term "retarded" to refer to a person / idea I am not likely to get offended (and I don't know all that many people who do), but it does make the person saying it sound insensitive and, IMO, extremely immature.
It doesn't take all that much effort to be reasonably respectful of other ethnic groups. There is some element of hypersensitivity in modern society, however, there are also a lot of people who are extremely insensitive, and they are just as much of a problem. I really don't think it's a lot to ask of people to recognize that certain groups of people have been treated horrifically throughout history (and in many cases continue to be) and to be sensitive to how your language affects people of different backgrounds.
Everyone makes mistakes, says things they don't mean, or is unaware of the meaning of a term. Rather than getting angry when someone calls you out, accept that you made a mistake and make a conscious effort to be more respectful.

There are many forms of political correctness, but using words like Nixxer, wog, Jap et cetera are not political incorrect, they are just wrong and racist. I was raised to respect all cultures - in "Apartheid South Africa". Use of the Kxxxxr word got us soap in the mouth.
The current run of chairperson , waitron etc is also just total BS. What is wrong with identifying if the person is female or male. Chairman in particular gets my goat - TMK this is based on the French words chaise=chair & main=hand, i.e. chairmain = the hand that ruled the chair. Not the Latin word "manus" as is so often quoted. Go listen to the pronunciation of the two words. The early "nobility" of England spoke French at Court and this influenced the development of the English language.
In fact this ( English language | Origin, History, Development, Characteristics, & Facts | Britannica ) is probably the best source of the development of English. 'Tis not a "pure" language at all despite what people may think.
Rant over. 🙂 Back to snake oil

Words have consequences, nothing serious here as you can hide behind your keyboard. You think you have the right to say what you like but you also think others don't have the right to be offend and tell you about it because it annoys you. Like much of what you say, that's hypocritical. In these modern times, you're expected, if not demanded to walk on eggshells with some people due to their hyper-sensitivty issues.
