Hi Robert,
We used to have a terrible time with service depots in Quebec. The worst work it seemed and lot's of trouble. We had warranty shops for Carver and ended up having to shut all Quebec shops down. So I would certainly love to recommend a good one. I just don't know of any.
There just has to be good service to be had in Quebec / Montreal somewhere! I will say they are all very friendly and nice to talk to. Service skills

The only good place I know in Montreal is Radio Hovsep, but they only work on analog and tube stuff. (But it's a good way to get tubes without having to order anything.)
There's an AV store/service center in St-Hubert which I found when looking for a Nakamichi-certified repair center. However, they don't order any parts from USA and don't know what aligning a tuner is so I wouldn't get anything repaired there. The only good thing I found there is that they sell Grado.

You can also look for Equitech, which was once called Hecotron, they repair electronics for lots of companies. Your CD player will get shipped somewhere in a large repair center. I wouldn't really trust them as I had to get a Panasonic portable CD player repaired there under warranty. The first time I sent it, they haven't found the problem and thought that I used scratched CDs. The second time, they got to repair it, but the laser pickup motor is VERY noisy when changing between tracks now.

I heard about a few individuals which have small stores that mod electronics and repair them. It costs an arm and a leg to go there, but they apparently do the job well. I don't remember the names and places but I have them somewhere.

Hi DragonMaster,

Yeah. They cranked up the tracking and focus gains. I've seen this before, maybe from the same darn shop. This is what I mean about crappy service. I hope they didn't increase the laser power. The second time, they got to repair it, but the laser pickup motor is VERY noisy when changing between tracks now.
Man. I wish there was a good place. There does not seem to be any and this is not good for anyone. Chop and hack seems to be the rule. An acquaintance calls them all "plumbers".I heard about a few individuals which have small stores that mod electronics and repair them. Hi Antoine,
What currency?
However, my main point is that you shouldn't have to worry about these things. I find with many service scenarios that the customer always gets the short end of the deal. This bothers me.
-Chris
Plus shipping! You are lucky if you can get a new pickup for $25.00.At least a new pickup costs only $25 if this one dies...

USD, so it's + shipping + taxes + $5, unless they take UPS and I clear it... That player has been biting dust most of the time since I bought it, so it's probably still possible to fix the problems.
Hi Chris,
The service manual should talk about this? Are any special tools required? (I have a digital multimeter and two dual-100MSps DSO ISA cards, which are partially defective)

Hi Antoine,
If your multimeter is good, it might be useful depending on the procedure. The analog 'scope is king here.
-Chris
Firstly, you do need an analog 'scope with a timebase of 0.5uS or better. If you want to use digital, I still like the Agilient ones, 200 MHz or better. A DSO is fighting a tough battle with these signals. Are any special tools required? (I have a digital multimeter and two dual-100MSps DSO ISA cards

Both DSOs can work in single channel 200MSa/s or dual 100MSa/s mode. When I use them with the DOS software, the refresh rate is pretty good. I don't have the money to buy an analog scope so I think I'll have to stick with them.

I have two DSO-28264. The logic analyzer part and one of the card's oscilloscope channels seem to have some little problems though. I don't know if they're worth sending to the company for repair(once I have enough $$$), considering I paid $80 for them and they cost $2500+ new.

Hi Antoine,
Then, you will see what I mean ....
You will need 10 X probes. You will find that DSO's are very poor at displaying these eye patterns. Even the newer 20 MHz analog cheapy scopes can display these patterns properly whereas a new Tek 4000 series or Agilent 5000, 6000 series are almost, but not good enough. We're talking over $6000 USD for the Tek and Agilent 6000 series.
I can't see your PC card jobs working very well. Then there is the tracking recovery waveform I often use. Again, an analog 'scope is the very best for this over an Agilent in 12 bit mode (most are 8 bit). That is a pain to set up.

I guess I'll save money for an analog scope then! Something like a Tek 4x5 or a 2000-series should do?
Risk assessments
My pickup is still going fine, no a hiccup, so I'm using until it actually dies. This talk of dodgy service is my prime concern, I've seen it in the past and it's nothing but a risk for the future. I have no problem taking my unit to an experienced technician and paying a representative price for a quality service, however dodgy service is cost in parts, time and effort.
As my pickup the KSS-213B was AU$44.95 shipped. I'm weighing up the cost of installing the unit myself and taking the unit to a friend who has the necessary equipment for proper tuning.
I can appreciate the advice to an experience technician to install, and I would really like this to happen, however it looks like this could be more difficult than having a go myself.

I can't give any advice but to find a service manual if you don't already have one, but if anyone else needs a KSS-21x I found this place a few years ago : http://www.studiosoundelectronics.com/cdlasers.htm
Hi Antoine,
A 2000 series Tektronix is a complete waste of money for this type of work. It's a DSO.
Don't ignore the Tektronix 2213 and 2235 models either. Often, the newer analog 20 MHz 'scopes work well. Brands such as Leader, Hitachi and Kenwood should be more than serviceable too.
So there are many options for you here. You must have an analog scope or one heck of an expensive DSO. An Agilent 8000 series would do nicely. Look up the price tag.
Hi Burt,
I'm sorry to hear that. If you replace the pickup head, replace the disc motor at the same time.
-Chris
A 4x5 Tektronix should be good, watch for tired CRT's.Something like a Tek 4x5 or a 2000-series should do?

Thanks DragonMaster, the more information the better.

It's unfortunate, however I have been directed to a repair service by an Arcam distributor for my area. I'll investigate it further.
Thanks for the advice on the disc motor, most helpful.
Hi Burt,
Well, in my experience with the normal CD motor, if the head is gone so is the motor. If the motor isn't it won't be far behind.
