Fresh new idea

jcbklyny, don't be such a jerk. im simply giving an idea. i am a very creative person and only because i dont have a diy projector it doesnt mean i can speak up and share my thoughts.

for all you know this could probably be a very good idea for a diy projector once the details are worked out. maybe even be a design that you'll use so dont knock it or me!

I plan on building one once i can come to a good design, "hence this idea". I dont want to go the OHP and lcd panel route because its impractical for my needs.

so if you want to "listen" in this thread, fine, if not there are many other threads in this forum that you're more than welcome to go too.

APO,

Those things aren't just prisms, I swear. The get ther effect from their coatings. The coatings are several layers of mettalic substances blasted on in layer that are thin RELATIVE TO THE WAVELENGTHS of VISIBLE LIGHT. (Think "tens of nanometers") This ain't homemade stuff.

Yank one out of a dead commercial projector or something. Or go hang out at a laser lab and poke through their garbage.

You can't make this thing out of just glass or plastic.

Prisms, yes. An X-Cube? No way.

The exact same thing can be done with dichroic mirrors (much cheaper) if you can get them. They are similar in technology and use the same types of coatings, but they have many other applications and will be easier to find.

I would concentrate instead on how you are going to get a hi-res pictures out of low-res panels.

Why are you people listening to someone who doesnt even own a DIY projector???

There once was a time when folks said you couldn't interface an LCD from a laptop with a regular PC with satisfactory results.
Been there done that!

Now if ap0the0sis runs into some technical difficulties that can't be overcome so be it. It's his game not yours..he's going to "break ground". He will spend money..he will experiment..he will make mistakes..he just might build "the cheapest bestest lil thang" that ever took over an industry. 😉

zardoz..."didn't even own a DIY projector" before he built his own...using a laptop screen.....

What's with all the flaming and negativity going on lately? Granted, I've "involved" myself in some of it, but I like it a lot better here when everyone is respectful and friendly. I've actually had arguments w/ the two people here in the past two days.

First, I had an argument with ap0the0sis over what contrast ratio meant, and then I had an argument with jcbklyny over whether or not there was a difference between coaxial digital and optical digital. But those are no big deal at all and not even close to ugly.

Then I just got through responding to some troll in my thread where I'm very skepitcal of CRT, mainly because of video games and Fox Sports Net.

Zardoz will definately remember this. I first came into this forum and started shooting my mouth off because people were in the "learning" stages of something I though I already knew everything about. It got ugly, I got booted for a week, and as much as I hate the guy who got banned after it all ended, he did read up a lot and share a lot of knowledge. So as happy as I am to see him gone, the whole thing hurt the forum overall.

Moderators are very strict here, and they don't put up with name calling. There's even a chance that my response to the troll might end up in Texas.

Anyways, him aside, I have no problem with anyone here and I think everyone is smart and creative. I think the key thing to avoid nastiness is respect. People start to be lazy and not pay attention to what others are saying by skimming through long posts (like this one), or they start stating their opinion as if it were a cold hard fact (which I have been guilty of). Or they get overly annoyed because they see someone else who doesn't know as much about something and treat them like a stupid person. That's how arguments start in these types of situations. Just remember that everyone has something to contribute, and I myself needed a little reminder of this as well.

lifter,

very true words. we had our words, as everyone here will bump heads at one point or another. its part of the process of thinking and creating something out of ten different ideas. I think that we need to work together and share ideas and comments without having to ban anyone or get nasty and disrespect anyone.

Im sure jcbklyny doesnt feel any better than he did before he said that comment. some people just have to share everything they think. I shared an idea, now add to it.

neededandwanted, i would really appreciate if you would take some time to design something you think would work. with the knowledge you have show us im sure we all can come to a great project.

I've though many times, why dont a few of the "best" (i use the term loosly) guys here get together and focus on the lamp/lighting, then focus on lcds and so on. Once one component is designed build and tested move onto the next. Either way this is what everyone is doing. waiting for someone to get good results so they can follow. so working together would be an idea.

how do those dichroic mirrors work? how would i use them to put the image together. How about red, blue, green leds?

If it weren't for the terrible SARS epidemic I'd suggest a bunch of us go visit YWH...with all the creative thought that pumps through here and all the awesome gear found in Asia we just might put the hurt on this industry. Oh yeah..I suppose the price of airfare..and hotels ..not to mention Saki and Geisha girls would drive up development costs some...

So thats why comercial PJ's are soo expensive! We are paying for development costs ...and Saki ...and Geisha girls for thos that went before us!

zardoz :devily:

did anyone else catch the show "Scientific Frontiers" with Alan Alda when he went to the "build anything lab"?

negativity

well guys i wasnt being negative with the remark i made, i said good luck! anyway its true what u have all said in the last 4 or so posts, we should get together and decide on from the info in the forum already to make the cheapest and best reso projector, i see too much info scattered all over the place so i think we should make a thread for serious ideas, including posting some old posts and make a thread for that perfect projector that we all designed and made come to reality, at the moment im looking for small bright mh bulbs so u can have a smaller projector, as my design is small (about the size of a vcr) and it is what i need, but at the same time im thinking in u guys with relector designs and smaller brighter bulbs. Hard to keep a box small with a 8inch bulb i must say hard to reflect at such a close distance too efficently, so in the end i may just find the perfect bulb for our perfect projector.

but anyway its upto us, someone start the thread and lets get to it

a positive thought

ok im not sure about in the usa but i know in australia and im sure in spain if u have an idea and want to research or start a business the government will sponser u in your project, worth to find out about it in your country for u guys who are serious in this stuff also comes under creating new inventions

negativity=bad 🙁

geez i hate Negativity 🙁 cant we all just get along 😉
lets all group hug u guys! 😀

besides Jcbklny is form New York wat do u expect:devilr: lol (J/K)
any ways i enjoy all opinions even if they crush belief we shold all have tolerance for each other... we ALL at some point were noobs and had no DIy projectors and what not. i respect lifter, apo, Zardoz and all the other knowledgable members and i look forward to learning more form all you guys. (sorry for off topic)

Equally Off-Topic...

Now we are getting down to the spirit of the INVENTION!

The real trick is to learn from the successes and failures of others. The ideas that everyone has to make all of the same mistakes themselves is hogwash. (as the cowboys say: "Some people learn from the mistakes of others, the rest just have to **** on the electric fence for themselves.")

The real trick is to make improved designs, not start from scratch.

It is the spirit of early aviation, or ham radio, or automobile hot-rodders and (OMG) speaker builders. It's tweaks and fixes and measurement and brags and "come over and see it!" and "oh, damn, I blew up my @#$%^&*!"

Now, it's totally fine for someone to come up with a design and everybody goes off and builds it. There is an apparent "best design" now with the "OHP plus 2 fresnels and a LCD ripped from a monitor" plan. To stick with that and make no changes reduces us all to hanging out on eBay looking for stuff and buying it.

There is certainly some fun in building a kit and having it work.

To make some changes and come back and say "by the way, adding ice cubes didn't help!" is what makes it exciting.

While many of the ideas are contrary to established thinking (state of the art) or impractical for reasons of cost (state of the market), they get us all thinking again.

So, it's not so much a matter or right and wrong ideas. There are certainly some mistaken assumptions floating around, but fortunately people will bounce the wild ideas off of each other before they try to make a lens out of solid helium or whatever.

Every once in a while you will see someone strap boards to their arms and announce that they are going to jump off of the roof and start flapping. The nice thing to do is politely butt in and say "excuse me, there is this matter of a lift-to-weight ratio and..."

And don't be surprised when the better ideas get adopted (stolen) by a commercial firm somewhere. You make an airplane out of bicycle parts and it belongs to aviation. You make a more powerful radio transmitter and they pass laws saying you can't use it.

It's totally fun to gain a greater understanding of a subject and innovate. When you get to "McGyver" something out of someone else's garage sale parts and leftover surplus and stuff made for other purposes that you picked up at the hardware store, that's where the "creating" is.

So, for the few of you that really just want to get a $1200 projector for half price AND you are not having any fun...I don't get it.

That half-price projector can be fun to play games on or watch "immersive porn" or whatever, and I'm not saying that this isn't the place to do it, but it's not in the spirit of innovation that keeps bringing cool toys into the world.

But at least you'll know better than to buy a $100 dime-store Fresnel to strap on to your TV.

off topic

well i got a few new ideas, im also in the process as im upto the stage of the final building of my projector, "the cooling and electronics" i see manny here well have seen manny in the past that have remote control lcd screens, well im going to design soon a circut that taps into your inverter power supply for your backlight that will enable 2 relays, 1 for light and one for fans, and with the fans having a delay of a time of your choice to turn off after the light and lcd turns off for extra cooling, and thast means u will only need one switch(main power) or for the ohp's just use the on switch to control everything with a delay on the fans, also thinking in a timer so u dont turn on the mh bulb too early before it is meant to be re-arced. Another idea is temp controlled fans, that could be a quieter solution for u too as in summer u will need a more powerfull fan as the temp gets hotter and in the winter a slower fan wich means quieter, so a fan that is temp controled will do the 2 things at once and also keeping things the same temp range, a moded comp cpu fan could do the job easily

one mans junk is another mans treasure

lights

and with the light isue, personaly i dont think u need 400w's of light power to get a 800lm pic, at the moment im looking at some prety fancy bulbs that are alot brighter(typically 1000lm) than the standard mh bulb, the bulbs im looking at are mh too but with a very small arc meaning a small bulb refector design perfect for ohp's. With this combo personaly it think with a 15" lcd u will need only 20000lm not 40000lm reducing running costs and heat

zardoz

np zardoz give me abit of time and ill have one drawn up, i plan to use ready availible parts for this so no one has an issue or cost probs, probally would cost about $10-$20 maybe cheaper probally in the sise range of a packet of smokes lol

Trev

Zardoz and people

heya zardoz this is that little circut i was going to draw up drawn, i havnt put in the timers yet but time is abit of an issue lateley, but this circut will enable the light and the fans to be powerd on when u power the lcd on with the remote and off too, all will turn on at once

WARNING!!!! people make sure u know what u are doing, this is with mains power!! make sure u are not drawing any more than 15amps with the lamp/ballast relay, if u are i sujest get a relay that will suport your current,
same aplies with the 12vDC fan relay, and for gods sake make sure the darn thing isnt plugged in, also make sure this is hooked up the way this is designed to be, 12v input from inverter 12v only! do not place at the end of inverter as will result in fire or shock!!

i will take no responsobility for your silly actions or injuries
