I'm responding here to test this out (just updated Firefox, the previous version was working fine) - the textbox above is fine, but instead of some of the icons it shows the tooltip text for them, starting with "Wrap [redirect] tags around selected text" all the way over to (offscreen, I have to scroll to see it) "Wrap [image] etc." These "buttons" work fine, though they're text instead of the corresponding icons. When all is said and done, the forum software seems to be telling the ad software that the message box is available for an ad ........
.......at least under Fire Fox under some conditions which are yet be defined .
FWIW
I just had a clear, normal message box under Fire Fox.......for about 5 seconds before it greyed out and then, an ad appeared.
So there is an incompatibility somewhere..
Yeah, I know it's a fact that it does not effect everyone with Fire Fox .
So just saying "I have no problem" is not shedding any light on the issue.😉
I run NoScript, mostly to help stop badware from loading. I usually "allow" enough for site functionality, and don't worry about whether ads load correctly or not (too often they do, but everything is still faster than with NoScript disabled) I now have this warning:
"NoScript filtered a potential cross-site scripting (XSS) attempt from [https://googlead.g.doubleclick.net]. Technical details have been logged to the Console."
I've gotten that off and on for many things, so it may not be actual badware, just advertising code that doesn't act well.
At least there's not an ad loading in the text window, but that may be because NoScript is blocking something. I'm loathe to turn it off to find out.[/image][/redirect]
I am the only one with this issue?
So far, just you and Carlsor are seeing "phishing" type ads. Kevin has reported a different issue, and now I on Safari seem some weirdness in the posting box as well. There's definitely an issue.
BTW, I installed "Ad Blocker"for FireFox on this sys (for trouble shooting) and even Ad Blocker is treating the message box as an ad
Thanks for the info.
I don't know how many times I can outline the issue (and my expertise) and have it completely ignored while treating me (and others) like computer ignorants who do not know what they are doing.
If you really knew anything about computers, you would understand that the only way to debug a problem is to eliminate possibilities.
However don't say the issues does not exist and / or it's somehow the users fault....as some have been inferring in this thread and in e-mails from forum support .
Again, Joe, understand the reply you got from helpdesk was a generic reply, from our lovely and quite non-technical helpdesk staff, for a problem that didn't previously exist and you were the first to report. It takes a while for a serious problem (which this appears to be) to escalate. It's nothing personal. We're not trying to persecute you. You do need to understand how things things get escalated, identified, and resolved - through communication, testing, and trial and error.
I have noticed that there is a different kind of forum software being used on this form that I have not seen elsewhere.
Perhaps the fourm software is at fault .
Actually, 90% of forums once ran this software. Now, it's a different kind of software, only because everyone else has abandoned it (we will as well in the coming months) 🙂
Definitely nothing wrong with the platform itself - it's a hack of some sort, and when I have enough data points, I can identify it and resolve the problem.
You meantioned "phishing" ads - we only serve Google ads and we block almost every sensitive topics - drugs, viagra, dating, politics. Only mainstream ads should ever be shown.
Yeah, I know it's a fact that it does not effect everyone with Fire Fox . So just saying "I have no problem" is not shedding any light on the issue.😉
Actually people saying "I have no problem" is very useful. Until 2 or more people have a problem, it's a problem that 1 person needs to solve themselves by following the clear debugging steps I posted above. If 2 people are having the same problem, out of 20,000 registered members who flow through the site each day... it would be very odd, and again, follow the 4 debugging steps I requested above. 3+ people - almost certain to be a non client related problem. I've stated this for your benefit, not mine.
Anyway, the most difficult problems are ones that can't be reproduced. I can see issues myself now with the posting box, so I have something to fix.
Ok guys, the junk you see in the advanced posting box is just caused, I believe, by the incomplete installation of our new Wiki. The developer of the wiki is actively assisting with its installation, and I believe that any visual aberrations are to do with that. Seeing [?] symbols or the text "Wrap [redirect] tags around selected text" in the advanced posting box, is to do with Wiki tags. You can ignore them for now - it doesn't look pretty but it's harmless.
The wiki saga has been a bit of a nightmare, but the lead developer of it is on the case, and I trust it will be resolved in the next 24-48 hours.
As for Joe's problem, that may, or may not be, a related issue. He shouldn't be seeing phishing scams, they shouldn't / couldn't be coming from "our" server or from Google, and the ad shouldn't be positioned in the textbox. It is an odd coincidence, and my gut would tell me that Joe's problem is something to do with this wiki stuff, and him and Carlsor using a very specific OS+FireFox version that displays the same HTML everyone else sees, in a particularly bad way.
Joe and Carlsor, please let us know the following:
Thanks. That helps us see any commonalities between the two of you. Then... Joe as you say you see your problem with the phishing ads in two different browsers, please do the following:
As I said above, my gut tells me this should just be the same minor problem to do with the Wiki installation, but the smoking gun would be the delivery of non Google approved ads (ie: anything dodgy looking).[/redirect]

Joe and Carlsor, please let us know the following:
- What is your exact OS and OS version?
- What is your exact browser version(s)?
- Do you have any plugins installed?

- To test your computer is not hacked - try another computer
- To test your modem/router is not hacked (increasingly common) - try your neighbors wifi connection or tether to your phone or visit the local library
- To test your ISP has been hacked or is inserting ads - try another ISP

I don't know if this is related or not.
I usually run IE 11 (version 11.0.9600.18124) on a W7-64 machine with Microsoft Security Essentials, no ad blocker. About a week or two ago some of the ads started partially displaying, usually the pictures missing.
Yesterday, I ran Firefox all day and noticed that this did not happen, but no anomalies were noted. Today I had both open together and some ads are mangled on IE, but OK on Firefox.

Thanks... could be a number of things including their (the shoe company's) ad back-end not serving up the pictures that are meant to be on top of those prices. I myself have noticed some ad oddities on the front page occasionally as well, ever since we started running them, but they were relatively few and far between. I don't believe the problem you report is related to the problems described in this thread, and my money is on Joe's issue just being an artefact of the other Wiki related issues, but we can't say until he replies with the answers to my specific questions.
The bug that caused the wiki buttons in the advanced posting box to go nuts have now been fixed by the wiki developer and things are looking good from my end and some other reports I've had from other users in the last few minutes.

] have already given most all that info many times.
All OS have all the service packs and all have the latest version of Firefox
The only plug in that is always on is Adobe Acrobat.
Even Flash is set to always ask to activate .
BTW, my ISP has been hacked and it only effects DIY Audio on Fire Fox?
I don't think so.
The more logical question is, has DIY Audio been hacked? 😉[/redirect]

Give the man a complimentary Enthusiast level membership for his troubles. See if that takes care of the ad issue too - that will eliminate some scenarios that are causing this.

LOL.......
Keep in mid that it not really my problem.... it's DIY Audio's problem.
I can still access the forums via IE.
I'm just pointing it out to them .
I must be some sort of masochist. 😉
I helped to make them aware of a problem so, my job is done .

For the record... You've never specified your exact Firefox version ("latest" isn't a version depending on circumstance - I need hard data). Or your OS version. Or whether you've tried changing your ISP. Or whether you've tried bypassing your router. Or whether you've tried the several other VB3 sites I went and found for you.
Anyway, still having the problem? The wiki problem appears to have been resolved. Does your issue still exist?

The issue still exists. on all systems..... XP, Vista and Win7
Al OS' are premium, full home versions with all service packs, etc .
All have Fire Fox version 44.0 installed
As I said before many times, no other site / forum has this issue.. or any issues at all.
BTW, I'm an old "stick and rudder" computer user and I have done every sort of trouble shooting I can think of to try to isolate it .
Everything on my end end seems to point to an issue with this site.

Thanks very much for the detailed information. That's exactly what I need. Also, that you are still experiencing this, so it's back to only you and Carlsor (correct me if I'm wrong).
Based on the fact it's only you guys at this point in time, at this stage I'll lean towards this being specific to your setup, so please try these steps and get back to me:
- To test your modem/router is not hacked (increasingly common) - try your neighbors wifi connection or tether to your phone or visit the local library
- To test your ISP has been hacked or is inserting ads - try another ISP in front of the router if you can
- To test all your computers (which I assume are on the same network) haven't all been compromised and your network hasn't turned into a window infecting malware octopus, you could plug a "friend's" laptop in to your network and see if the problem persists or better yet as the morality of that might be dubious, try and a freshly re-installed copy of windows with FF44 on it

First off, these are not laptops etc,..... they are all mid towers .
Try a different ISP? Are you serious?
A router or modem hacked to block just this site?
Again are you serious?
Joe, a little patience and understanding on your part would go a long way. We are trying to help.
So far only you, and maybe one other person, have seen this. That makes it difficult to figure out.
A lot of help has been offered, please accept it in good faith. So far, this looks like an isolated problem. The normal assumption is that an isolated problem is on the client end. That is the first thing to look at. So that was done. One step at a time.

If you don't want to help yourself, I can't help you. FYI easiest way to do this for your tower is to unplug it from your network, plug in your phone via USB (assuming it's a different ISP than your home connection), and tether your phone to your computer.

BTW, I wonder how many others also can't use the site and simply gave up on it.
We appreciate the notice, but are having a hard time finding it on this end. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Why do you keep insisting that I have a smart phone I can tether anything to ?
My cell phone is just that.. a phone and absolutely nothing else.
My computers are all hard wired to my router and my WI FI is only used /turned on (occasionally) for my ROKU .
