I am very proud about my DIY backloaded horns based on the FOSTEX FE 108 EΣ sigma 4"inch fullrange speaker.
The cabinets construction plans were downloaded from Fostex.
I have Recently modified them in a two way speaker replacing the Fostex 4inch with an ETON 4 ohms midwoofer and adding a 4 ohm tweeter.
My crossover is divided in a 4th class for the woofer and a 3d class for the tweeter.Still expirimenting on these crossovers but the results up to now are excellent.
Fostex FE 108 EΣ sigma 4"inch are great speakers but a little bit harsh in the mid and higher frequencies.
Now the lower frequencies have more warmth and power and the mids are warm and sweet sounding.
When i am placing the speakers close to the back wall the bass production becomes huge and fills the room 40 (sq.meters)
Please show some consideration about the appearance of the units (marks and scratches) .I will update with photos of the final painting, veneer etc
Any questions or thoughts about these speakers are well accepted.
Thank you

We are happy that you are pleased with your enclosures. We like pictures a lot 🙂
Seriously, w/o at least links to your Eton and the backhorn that we might/not recall/mix-up with others, it's hard to comment.
For those with less time than me today, it would seem to have been this encl.

The factory horn is mediocre.
Also your mid comment is a bit unusual, it is noted for its glorious midrange.Usually only the suck-out at 1kHz is commented about.
They are hard to get bass out of, and the top is noted as “soft”. What amplifier do you have?

The fostex mids are crystal clear and detailed but they lack warmth.
Depends on the music you will try them. The problem appears at the upper mid frequencies wich in my opinion are a little bit harsh .

These ETON midwoofers are not produced anymore and are really hard to find.I happen to have a few pairs (new old stock)but they all need refoaming.I have managed to put new rubber membranes on a pair and try them on.
Here is a photo of one of the units as they came out of the box with the destroyed membranes .

Colour me not a huge fan of Eton units. Decent cones for the most part, but the motors are typically mediocre (or worse). Which doesn't mean I don't think some (many) other units aren't up to much either of course. 😉 Glad you're enjoying your speakers though -that's the point at the end of the day.
With these enclosures the bass production of FE 108 es is satisfying but with the ETONs the deep bass this enclosure produces is really amazing. The factory horn is mediocre.

Hmm. Well, notionally Qt and Vas are similar, with the former a touch higher for the Eton (the Fostex having been designed primarily for use with high output impedance amplification or equivalent compensation) though nothing major, the main difference being the nominal midbass's Fs being rated at about 18Hz lower, which will extend the LF gain BW a little.

BTW: best horn we ever used, supraBaffle required to fit the magnet,

The honeycomb material in the fuzzy pic looked like Eve Audio / Mivoc / Jamo C-series / Eton MAS80 and not like the usual Eton Hexcone? I've done a few with Eve etc. fiberglass honeycomb but not Eton, and would sometimes wonder what I'm missing. I've also done the FE108eΣ several ways, neutralizing the sharp rise to 2khz and firming/supplementing bass of course.

(Just saw this; immediate reply no longer trigger an alert.)wchang any suggestions about speaker combinations for FE108e∑ enclosures?
I vote honeycomb as you have done. I turned a 4" Mivoc-like into a mid-tweeter by adding automotive plast-tape rosette-whizzer. There's a picture somewhere (search LXmidi plast)....
I hope some day mine will look and sound as good as yours.
My minimalist XO-less "LXmidi" uses 8" and 4" fiberglass-honeycomb drivers of the same make (cone material and FR similar to Mivoc XAW-208-HC/XAW-110-HC), using off-axis attenuation as low-pass and open-baffle fall-off as high-pass; I could not hear "two" drivers. Inside the can is a folded concentric transmission line which the 8" loves. The 4" later got treated to a "plast & whizzer" that nulled the HF cone breakup and extended very HF to go tweeterless.

The Chinese brand called Correct (leather surround based on the classic Diatone P-610) worked well for me in MLhorn (ML-TQWT), i.e. block the mouth except for a port. This store iwistao may sell them....
In China (taobao) this is branded "Correct" DG-603A (see picture). I have only used their leather-surround multiple-concentric-zone beige-cone P610-like whizzer-less fullrange drivers in 5/6.5/alnico8", not this other series rubber-surround white-cone with whizzer. Judging by the store's audioclips these white-cone have a more modern sharper sound.
(My stacked micor55 and alcor66 used the beige-cone, which weren't perfect but excelled in certain aspects so one wished they were.)

How to disable the new AUTO EMBED?

No i haven't but the one 108es is not working anymore because its damaged and thats how i decided to experiment with the Etons. To tell you the truth i wouldnt go back to the 108 es but i would like to have it fixed .With the Fostex, did you use a baffle step filter? That will add som lower range warmth...
Any idea if there is a Fostex repair center in Europe?

Also please dont judge the appearance of the Etons and the glue residues after membrane change.
Thank you, nice work and no worries. The building of anything (and especially with changes) is to be celebrated! It is about the DIY (and the listening to good music)! Congratulations and thank you for sharing.
